Until they released a patch that let you view in older versions of office, you could not open this document. You couldn't even convert it.

So for businesses that share documents with other companies that are not up to date on technology/software, they are SOL.

And with Microsoft, everything needs a patch. The fact that they made 16 billion in profit, and still managed to come up with this crap, while Open Office, Google Docs, etc are getting bigger and bigger is such a dumb corporate move.

Another reason why corporations are greedy and will do anything to get more money out of you no matter what.

I bet this is stemming from lost of profits on their Windows Vist.. I mean 8 OS's. That's what happens when a company releases something half-assed just to compete with other companies (Apple, Android).
I see where you're coming from, but all those users had to do was change how they saved the file and save it as a .doc and it could easily be sent to other businesses that had older software. Workarounds were very easy.

Yes they were very easy. And it was easy to change the format so it can be viewed in older versions. But I'm sure you've dealt with incompetent users who did not know how to do this even after you've instructed them numerous times.

Or the many executives that I've dealt with who thought that this was just way too much work to do in order for other users to view the document.

This was just Microsoft's way of saying pony up the $$$ and upgrade your software.

If it wasn't for all the users complaining for the patch, I'm sure they would of never released it.

Have you ever looked up what the difference actually is between a doc and docx and why they made that change, or is that too damaging to this hypothetical to bring up? Is there a new format this year making this even relevant?

Why in the world is MS branding this under the Office 365 moniker if it's not hosted software? I swear they try to confuse the **** out of everyone.

Yes I have. and you mean to tell me they couldn't of done all the "benefits" by keeping the same format?

            Don't be fooled by Microsoft.

Open office isn't that great when you are used to doing high end stuff with Excel. Libreoffice is a bit closer and I've liked it more, but still hard to beat what I get out of Office. However, I always have access to a corporate license through my dad or school so not really a problem for me. But even then, it's not that big a deal. I'm pretty sure some of you pay well over $100 per MONTH for cable. Or you spend $100 a year on other things you don't really need, whereas Office is in general useful if you use it a lot like I do.

It wont effect large businesses because the majority use office pro-plus in the enterprise environment. pro-plus is a volume license to begin with. We have had/testing office 13 pro plus for about 2 weeks (home use program). I honestly dont see companies adopting office 13 anytime soon if at all.
I dont remember there names but they were allot of fun....

                  ^^ MAK's ftw.

I'm stunned that MS had the balls/lack of brains to try to market this to residential customers.

No need to market it when they basically give it away. See if you're elgible:
