Optical cable is really all you need.

      What's your budget?

To get lossless audio you'd need a system that has HDMI inputs.

          I'd suggest Yamaha or Onkyo.

          http://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-YHT-397...theater+system

IMO, you want a system that has a dedicated HDMI receiver and powered subwoofer (auto room calibration is a nice feature as well).

What changed since you got HD? Getting HD doesn't really change much unless it isn't hooked up correctly. You should only need a HDMI cable to pass the video and audio.

What is your current set up? Like somebody else said you probably just need an optical cable. That carries a digital signal...2nd best audio option.

Im not using home theater right now. I have a samsung LED tv and a HDMI cable to my DVR reciever. The home theater i have dont have a HD hookup but does have a optical. I felt like the optical wasnt working right and it sounded like normal tv.

I've had that happen before. It's likely 1 of 2 things: 1) Your optical cable is broken and needs replacing or 2) The optical input on your HT device is broken.

Im thinking of getting a little something but I live in an apartment and will for a few more years so can't have wires all over the place. Was thinking of getting one of the sound bar systems...anybody have one of these or know how good they are? Maybe I could go with a wireless surround sound system but if the bar is good would like one of those...thoughts?

Get a nice Denon receiver open box from Best Buy which I got for about 320 and then get a 5.1 speaker system like the Energy Take Classic for about $400 or the Monoprice version for $250 which is the same speaker set but Monoprice put their own name on them...Not sure if that is legal or Energy allowed them to do that but you can get the same great $400 speaker set for $250 which comes with a dedicated power sub

It is a fantastic set up. But you need a good receiver to play loosless audio like Dolby True HD or HD Master Remix DTS

                        Optical can't do that

A sound bar (especially with a decent subwoofer) will definitely be better than tv speakers, but if you're looking for true surround sound they don't come close to providing that.

The Sony soundbar + sub gets pretty good reviews.

Something small 32" soundbar and sub for $100
                              http://www.amazon.com/Philips-CSS212...ords=sound+bar

If you want a 40" soundbar and wireless sub for $235
                              http://www.amazon.com/Vizio-SB4021M-...vizio+soundbar

IMO, I'd go with one of these 5.1 systems and simply not use the rear speakers if you don't want to run wires. These will provide more inputs, give you lossless audio and obviously MUCH better sound.

                              Onkyo 5.1 for $255
                              http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-HT-S3500...speaker+system

Yamaha 5.1 for $285 (has auto room calibration)
                              http://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-YHT-397...speaker+system
