Well the Sith have the rule of 2 so there can only be 2 of them, and Anakin had all the jedi killed so there was only Yoda and Obi-Wan left, so did he not bring balance to the force? After Obi-Wan got killed, Luke stepped into his place so it was still 2 v 2.

I don't understand your complaint. If they made him the exact same badass that Darth was from jump street, would that really be fun to watch?

I said that it's weak characterization to show Ren going from being strong enough stop blasters in mid-air to failing to beat an untrained stormtrooper and an orphan from a backwater planet. I can suspend some disbelief for the ideas that A) he was shot by Chewbacca and B) isn't as strong as he leads on, but it shouldn't have been a contest between him and Finn whatsoever. I referenced Vader because that's the closest analogy to make; here's another, would you have found it acceptable if 9 year-old Anakin jumped down from the Naboo starship in the hanger and defeated Darth Maul without any training? No. I call it weak writing to kick-start a character's progression from zero to sixty in two pages rather than showing them develop over time -- especially if they try and fail. I would have found it infinitely better if Rey tried to fight Kylo and got her *** kicked and had to have Chewie save her in the Falcon as the planet imploded. That would set up VIII far more realistically than Rey flipping the Skywalker switch and getting plot armor when it's convenient for the story.

Hitting the Jedi switch on Rey partway through the movie is poor character writing. Maybe I'm more sensitive to this than the average fan since I'm an avid reader and writer myself, but it's so glaring to me that its a distraction from the movie.

Kylo Ren is hyped as strong but he is clearly not. He's erratic, easily flustered, half baked, un trained, but naturally strong compared to others. These things become apparent as the film goes on. He is not the stoic Sith Lord grand master bringer of death and evil formulaic antagonist that is Vader (at first) or Darth Maul. Seems like you went in with preconceived ideas with what Kylo was suppose to be. Hell we all did but as the movie goes along we find out it's a facade.

I don't have a problem with his fight with Finn. Kylo is hurt yes. That brings him, a not fully trained villain, down a notch. Finn is also a basic trained soldier. However, Finn gets wrecked by Kylo. Perhaps the filmmakers wanted Finn to go out like a hero instead of a complete zero? If Finn was completely unabashedly destroyed, that would be no fun whatsoever. But in the end, Finn lost handily by an injured Ren like he was suppose to be.

His fight with Rey. Kylo is in an emotional state even before he kills Han. He has already shown to be deathly afraid of what Rey is capable of even as a rookie force user. And as the fight goes on, it becomes clear that Ren does not want to defeat her or kill her. He wants to flip her. Probably because he's afraid of what this woman will become if she is his enemy. Kylo is a scared guy. That's his characterization from jump street. Rey proved she has training in combat. The film establishes this early. And during the fight there is no force using. So Injured emotional mind ****ed untrained Kylo Ren losing to a pissed off, force awakened, boyfriend probably dead, and to some capacity combat trained Rey is not as far fetched as you make it seem. Kylo Ren IS NOT A FULLY REALIZED SITH MONSTER.

With all that said, I did have a problem with Rey becoming obi wan out of no where mind tricking people and summoning lightsabers. With that said I realize JJ Abrams job wasn't to reveal all. He presented questions that the sequels are to answer. We will find out more about her in the future give that time and have some patience. It's not like she pulled down a destroyer with her force powers or something. It's telling that her fight with Ren didn't involve force pushing or pulling etc. it was two force noobs behaving like noobs. I'm sure if these two meet again in the end of the trilogy and are fully trained you'll see something completely different and it will be incredible to compare it to this first fight.

But anyway, Kylo is awesome. I'm sorry he didn't live up to you expectations. Like he himself is afraid of not living up to his grandfather's legacy. Oh wait is that what they call meta writing? Cool. Lol

Yeah Kylo seems to be someone when his emotions are in check he's capable of really strong stuff (stopping a laser shot in the opening scene, doing good work with mind-F'ing people before dealing with Rey who has Force power as well. But as soon as he loses his cool, he's much easier to handle. That in addition to wanting to flip Rey does matter for sure. Like a lot of this post.

As for the why people spoil talk, it's kind of just a metaphor or product (can't think of the best term) for what the internet has done. People no longer have accountability. Kids who are unhappy at home can get their kicks indirectly harassing other people completely anonymously. It seemed to really start up big time with Harry Potter and the infamous videos that went viral before going viral was cool. I remember seeing the guy drive up to a line of people waiting to buy the book and the dude cruises up in a van and yells those three words and the little girl starts crying. That's the Internet generation, pretty much.

So this might be a dumb question

Do I have any hope of catching this movie in a theatre that isn't totally packed? Normally I would go to the last show on a school night but obviously it's winter break.

I don't think I can wait until the first week of January for break to be over. I've conceded that I'm gonna have to just pop a pill and deal with my anxiety that triggers when I'm in crowds.

Maybe I should just call the theatre and ask what my best bet would be?

Kids who are unhappy at home can get their kicks indirectly harassing other people completely anonymously. Perfectly said man. This drives me crazy on so many levels. Keyboard heroes. Ugh. Anyways as far as your questions goes early showings are usually pretty decent. I remember I saw Age of Ultron on I believe the first day and the 11am showing had something like 15 people in it. Of course it wasn't Winter Break but still.

You probably could see a super late showing during the week and have it pretty empty. If you have a theater near you that lets you choose your seats (AMC does this around me idk about everywhere) then see how open the showing is

Why R2-D2 was asleep, how he got the map to Luke and at the very end, explains why Luke was revealed at the end of the movie.

I still think R2-D2 was instructed to wake up once Rey was in R2's presence. It's too much of a coincidence not to be deliberate. Perhaps JJ and crew are saying that R2 just happened to wake up to avoid spoiling Rey's heritage?

I'm near Seattle and I went to a small theater during the Seahawks game. There were maybe 25 people in there. As far my thoughts:

Ren is very powerful, but not fully trained. The Supreme Leader says as much. He has some very powerful skills, but isn't a fully rounded force user. And that would especially seem to apply to lightsaber combat; it's not like he's honed those skills over years of fighting other force users. And beyond that, Luke holds his own, largely untrained, against Vader in Empire, and is still a not fully trained Padawan when he defeats Vader in Jedi (that was his trial; despite what Luke says, Yoda tells him he is not a Jedi Knight until he confronts his father). Anakin is an incredibly strong Jedi and lightsaber duelist, and is still defeated by Obi Wan. So there is precedent for Rey, who is seemingly very strong in the force, to hold her own against a wounded, not fully trained, and even somewhat conflicted enemy.

As far as the memory wipe thing, I think she's obviously a Skywalker as well. Whether she was left on Jakku by Luke or her mother, we'll find out in sequels. And they've already borrowed from the Old Republic series for Kylo (Knights of Ren worshiping Vader versus Order of Revan, and his mask). I think her memory wipe could be like that of Revan as well. It's not that they left parts, but that the "awakening" Kylo Ren mentioned started her breaking through. I think she was being trained, but after his nephew turned to the Dark Side, Luke queaastioned his ability as a teacher and sent her away so that she wouldn't learn of the force and turn to the dark side as well, as his father and nephew did, and he almost did.

I also believe that, in the end, she'll use a double bladed lightsaber a la Darth Maul. She uses a staff already, and the lightsaber in her possession was the first lightsaber of Luke and Anakin (it may be his second; I believe he loses one on Geonosis), and constructing one yourself is part of the training (part that I bet Kylo hadn't gotten to before he left).

Maz Katana uses the force, imo,
but isn't a Jedi. She would be the first character in the movies (and second canon character after Ashoka) to use the force and not be Jedi or Sith.

Overall, I loved the movie. It was my 3rd favorite (behind Empire and Sith). Plan on watching it again soon. It didn't have a lot of my favorite parts of Star Wars - epic lightsaber duels and heavy force use - but that wouldn't have made sense here. It does set up for a lot of that later on. I wonder if we'll find out Leia is a Jedi later; they say Luke was "believed" to be the last Jedi, but Leia is obviously strong in the force (feels Luke in Empire, feels Han die), and her regret in sending Ben away could very well be in not training him herself.

I've been waiting for some to bring this up! I kind of figured this maybe why Kylo's lightsaber looks rough and has the hand guard on the hilt. Maybe he constructed his lightsaber but the hilt cannot contain the amount of "power" that the lightsaber holds and the hand guard is to accommodate the power.

Yep my brother spoiled it for me...so pissed. I was planning to use my winter break to watch all 6 of the others because I haven't seen them before and want to. And then at some point watch this one. Maybe when it comes to Blu-Ray or something. And was so pissed he had to spoil some of it for me. And he hasn't even seen the movie just heard it from people.
