    Re: Dexter (Season 8)

    Not surprising.

The fan response to the Dexter series finale was mixed, but one complaint that seemed to echo again and again was that the writers did not have the fortitude to simply kill Dexter, as it looked like they'd intended to do.

Dexter's survival seemed, to some, to be a manufactured attempt to keep the character available for a possible continuation down the line. Dexter producer John Goldwyn has now revealed that the writers were, in fact, prevented from killing Dexter.

“They won’t let us kill him,” Goldwyn told Vulture in a recent interview. ”Showtime was very clear about that. When we told them the arc for the last season, they just said, ‘Just to be clear, he’s going to live.’”

“There were a lot of endings discussed because it was a very interesting problem to solve, to bring it to a close,” he continued. “People have a relationship with Dexter, even if it doesn’t have the size and the ferocity of the fan base for Breaking Bad. But it has a very core loyal following.”

What do you think? Did Showtime make the right choice for the series? Or should the network have allowed the writers to make the ultimate decision about Dexter's fate for themselves?

Maybe they wanted to leave the door open for another season or a movie? but that would suck without Debra.
The ending and season was so bad you might as well give them all a happy ending.

The series ended after season 4. Dexter was killed in a horrible shaving accident (as you can clearly see in the opening credit sequence) and Deb (the only likeable character in the whole show) raised Harrison to be a normal, albeit foulmouthed, little boy.

        The End.

In my mind, Deb finds Dexter in the Season 5 finale (Lumen escapes). Skip ahead to Season 7 and it ends with Deb shooting Dexter instead of LaGuerta in the container.

          The End.

Just finished a binge watch of the entire series in 10 days.. Really wish I would have stopped after Season 4. Season 6 almost made me stop watching altogether, it was SO bad.. Season 8 wasn't nearly as bad as Season 6 until the last few scenes of the series..

yeah the first season was probably the best imo, and the second wasnt terrible. but I still think the last season offered very little of anything and those ending scenes were the absolute worst.

Funny that this thread gets bumped today. I just started watching Six Feet Under and it's interesting seeing Michael C. Hall in a different role than Dexter, although there are similarities between the two of course.

4th, 1st, and 2nd were the best seasons in some order. Personally I think the 4th was the peak of the show. Also, as good as Season 2 was, they ****ed themselves over by using the Bay Harbor Butcher storyline so early in the show's run.

I would go 2, 1, 4, then 7. The one with Tom Hanks son was horrible, I believe that was 6. Season 5 with the motivational speaker I think was right up there. It was time to pull the plug. Was a great watch for many seasons.

It's been awhile since I've rewatched it, but I'll still defend Season 5 as a good season (or okay at the very least). The biggest issue was that they copped out with the season finale and wrapped everything up neatly and perfectly. Had they done the reveal of Dexter's dark passenger to Deb instead of being ridiculous and letting her let Dexter and Lumen get away while standing behind a conveniently placed white sheet, it would be held in a much higher regard than it is.

The way it ended, I think Dexter lends itself better to binge watching. The last 4 seasons were a mess, but there's a big difference between watching them over 4 years and watching them over a couple weeks. Though the finale was ridiculously bad no matter how you're watching it.
