I love all of these characters (very redeeming qualities in Mr. Bong), but the majority of their scenes are riddled with childish humor. The second BB was introduced, that film went down a notch to "Oh yeah, we sometimes have to sit through this kind of crap." Kind of like the Barbie & Ken stuff in Toy Story 3.

I guess my point with these characters is that less is more. I could also point to Gru's minions in Despicable Me. They had a spin-off that I will never ever watch, and if any of these other characters had their own "spin-off" (this film is pushing close to that in a way), it's something I would look less forward to. Their sheer existence is not a problem at all... EDIT: that sentence was a bit ironic all things considered.

Mater is a character that is purely there for childish/low-level humor in a subpar Pixar movie. He's an alley-oop for merchandising and marketing to kids. He doesn't even belong in the same sentence as Bing Bong or Dory.

I won't speak on Dory much, but both her and Bing Bong served as huge emotional pieces to each film - Bing Bong even more so than Dory. Sure, the surface of Bing Bong is childish and low-level, but his symbolism is so powerful to the overall theme of the film that he is a very important piece to the puzzle. His character arc is one of the most emotional aspects of the film and really ties all the themes of maturation and growing up into one.

Mater was nowhere near as complex or complete of a character.

I don't disagree with anything you said (especially regarding Bing Bong... trust me, he left me very emotionally impacted).

My best tie-in wasn't that they were the same character, but like I mentioned about the "spin-off" thing: once they are centered around story-wise, we are taken to eye-rolling elements of just far too much childish nonsense. I could keep coming up with more characters from any of the Pixar films really, but those ones really shout louder because they're more recent incarnations.

I don't doubt Finding Dory will also leave me wanting Kleenexes somehow, but at the same time I already know that they're going to fill this film with Dory-like comedy, which for me is not why I like these films. Honestly, I normally like Pixar more because of how mature they can be, even back to when I was a kid and Toy Story first came out. I didn't watch the other Dreamworks films and such because they were simply just kids movies to me. I never felt the same way with Pixar films. Unfortunately, they still do hit all crowds, which means you're bound to see things you won't quite enjoy. The question is how much of it is there, and how often.

I think some people in here are thinking I'm saying they are the same kind of character or that I don't like them. That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying the characters that Pixar has flushed out are representative of the same childish story elements where, if "left out," takes the film to possibly more mature heights. Now, in the case of Bing Bong, one moment in particular probably helps offset all of the "immature" aspects to which I was referring. I also made mention of this for Dory in this thread more than two years ago. I know what they're capable of given their characteristics. I just hope they use those qualities a bit more than: "Let's make six year olds giggle."

I have no interest in pushing the franchises past their original scope. I feel that way about this movie and Toy Story 4.

Having a Bing Bong movie would be terrible and would detract from his character in Inside Out.

Re: Finding Dory (2015 sequel to Finding Nemo)

I just saw it with my mom and baby sister.

I must say that I was basically left with: "This story did not need to be told." I think Dory's character was plenty expanded upon in Finding Nemo, and I don't really feel like I have learned more about any characters as a result of this movie being made. However, it hits on emotions and subtleties quite well, but then you're left with characters with zany antics and moments that are beyond any realm of realism even for Finding Nemo. The last act could have been completely taken away, and it probably would have tightened up the film more.

Maybe I'm not giving it a fair shake because I was the one earlier in the thread who stated that I can only take Dory in small doses. I re-watched Finding Nemo earlier today and gained more sympathy for her condition, but it rang a bit hollow for me this time around because she is now the centerpiece and does a lot of traveling on her own. She talks to herself so much that it kind of just stressed me out. The film was best when it slowed down, and it did that plenty of times, but it wasn't quite as simple as Finding Nemo.

I found this sequel to be a bit of a lost cause, even though this and its predecessor have dealt with disability quite remarkably. This is Pixar quality filmmaking, but wanted to add characters and scenes for children to enjoy, and wanted to create a spin-off type story that needed never be, in my opinion. Once again, bring on Incredibles 2 please!

The short in front of it though, called Piper, was my favorite short of theirs I have ever seen. Incredibly cute and adorable!

Pretty much how I feel. The first one was a true underwater adventure. This one couldn't wait to leave the ocean fast enough, and brought us with needless characters aimed for children's laughter.

Now I didn't hate the film, but nowhere do I feel like this is a rewarding chapter two if chapter one is the original film.

By the way, I did not see it in 3D, but I bet that would have been a great experience. A lot of shots would have brought some seriously nice pop.

Batman and Robin. Bane was so dumb in that.

In all seriousness, I go into a movie expecting to enjoy it, not to critique everything wrong with it. I never notice 90% of what the movie snobs here criticize.

Batman vs Superman was one of the most enjoyable movies I've seen this year. I like the Twilight series, I thought X-Men Origins: Wolverine was pretty cool.
