Jean Stapleton -- who played the iconic role of Edith Bunker on "All in the Family" died Friday in New York City. She was 90. According to her family, Stapleton passed away of natural causes.

Stapleton won three Emmys from her work on "All in the Family" opposite Carroll O’Connor’s equally iconic character, Archie Bunker. Stapleton's last major role was in the 1998 film "You've Got Mail." She played a co-worker of Meg Ryan's character. Her husband of 26 years, William Putch, passed away in 1983. She is survived by her two children, John and Pamela.
I grew up watching All in the Family. This show was my 1st glimpse of how other people families lived.

Pretty sad but isn't it ironic that on the show she died before Archie but in real life Archie died before her. Always loved that show though, this along with Good Times and The Jeffersons could take racial tensions of the day and make everyone laugh about it. The world is too pc for those shows now. Always classics though

If you younger guys want to watch a pioneering show and haven't seen this, this is the one. At the time, this really set the bar for social commentary and challenging your political standpoints and value base. It had an interesting mix of hilarious moments along with the occasional sobering scene.

Jean Stapleton, who some may have only seen in the movie, Michael (Travolta), played her role brilliantly. Plus, she demonstrated a personal growth of the character over the many seasons it was on.

The only mistake the show made was that they let it on the air too long. I do believe that the Smithsonian Institute have the living room chairs of Archie and Edith housed for display.

The last time I saw her was in the pretty good "You Got Mail" film starring Hanks and Meg Ryan. She played a fairly minor role, but didn't look bad for 75.

          RIP Jean/Edith

            How was your day, Archie?

Git me a beer, Edith and I'll tell how lousy my day was.

            Moon River.

Great actress, she played great against Carrol O' Conner.

So much truth to this statement...

I loved this show and still watch Good Times and the Jeffersons to this day.

I grew up watching the show as well. The first five years were great, the later years and Archie Bunker's Place weren't so hot IMO. RIP.

Agreed. Not so memorable after Mike and Gloria left town.

I guess at the time you have to make the decision of trying to make it work no matter what. I mean how do you walk away from one of the greatest formulas ever to adorn the little screen?

And the ratings were still high.

I shudder to look at the competition!

The episodes when she asserted herself were great....
