Re: How I Met Your Mother: Season 9 (The Final Season)

It's not that we wanted a mourning period but I think way more time needed to be devoted to her illness and death. It was literally glossed over with like a 3 second clip in a hospital bed and then after they met when the daughter said "you know, she's been gone 6 years now."

That's IT. For the biggest shocker in the entire ****ing series. That's IT.

They treated the Mother as an afterthought. Why aren't we, the viewers, supposed to do the same?

I don't think it was a shocker. They foreshadowed it very strongly, so it's a confirmation, not a twist. They could have devoted a little more time, but I'm talking like 30 seconds, nothing that's going to significantly impact anything. It's best left open ended, as the kids already know the story of her sickness and death.

So what were peoples fave moment(s)/line(s) from the main characters?
For me: (I'm probably forgetting obvious things)

        Barney
Line(s): (the pilot, when it showed flashbacks to moments he said ___ suit up and legendary)
Moment: When he was on Price is Right and won everything so easily(and stopped in the middle of the game to show Bob Barker pictures of Barneys childhood)

        Marshall
Line: NOT GOOD ENOUGH! (and his Lawyered moments)
Moment: When he was singing everything he did

        Lily
        Line: You SonOfABeach
Moment:Not so much a moment, but everytime she or marshall said something(usually relating to their marriage to prove a point to everyone) and then they'd high five

        Robin
Line: Explaining anything using Canadian terms. And for her and Ted...the "Major _____" or "General ___" and stuff lol.
Moment: When she went all Canadian on everyone and tried fighting Lily

        Ted
Line: Any of the lines where he tried being smart(EncyclopEdia....RenAIssance fair)
Moment: When he was rapping and thought he was good, but turned out he was real bad

        Mother
Line: "Plus, you muttered a few words out loud. I heard "lonely" and "unicorn", which actually gave me a great idea for a children's book, so...thank you"
Moment: When she owned Barney at the drugstore in their first meeting

One of funniest overall was the intervention on interventions.
Ok, So my favourite moments with the HIMYM characters were...

Barney: Obviously very touching moment when he held his baby Ellie and what he said to her, but also the time he flew to San Francisco to save Marshall and Lilly's relationship was a great moment that showed Barney Stinson has a soul and when he barged into Ted and Marshalls apartment practicing his entrance onto the price is right only for Ted to lock the door!...I was never a huge fan of Barney I felt his character got really stale especially after season 6 but his interactions with his brother James were good, tho i didn't find him meeting his dad all that special.

Marshall: When he shaved his head at his wedding was hilarious!, When Marshall & Lily broke after she left for San Francisco and he fell into depression and they showed how similar falling in love and being heartbroken is...it was sad but he was comedic about it, When he received his msg on his phone from his Father who had just passed away, His runs with Ted to Chicago for Pizza, Marshall telling the guys he is more experienced with women because mathematically he has had sex more,When he defeated his Bro Brad in court and decided to become a judge, and when he told Robin to move out showing his true loyalty to Ted...Marshall was one of my favourite characters and I liked him more as the series went on.

Lily: I enjoyed flashbacks of teenage Lily in her Goth phase!, She was cool as a Parrot for holloween, and was a little funny giving birth to baby Marvin...Looking back i got annoyed with Lily her comedic lines were cheesy, and her constant sooking threw me off, early on in the show she was kinda Marshall's cool girlfriend, Happy,fun,open-minded and the gang come to her for advice and then to me she became Marshall's manipulative wife and a little bit of a drainer to the show...tho it was nice to see how sickening two people can be in love with each other even after years and years - Marshmellow and Lillypad!

Robin: I loved the whole Robin Sparkles thing!, and all her Canadian lingo...My favourite moment was when Ted made it rain and they first got together to the soundtrack of "this modern love by The Block Party", and maybe when she realised she liked Don...I always thought Don and Robin were a great match and kinda hoped they worked out i thought her relationship with Barney didn't feel right and didn't offer much couple's chemistry...Loved Robin, she was hot, funny and full of personality and as much as we hated it she was always emotionally connected with Ted, Ted new this and thats why he could never let her go.... "Do you love me".........."No".....

Ted: Well,I am a big Ted Moseby fan and he was my favourite character, I feel like he taught me some things about life!...My favourite Ted moments were - How he pulled Marshall out of his depression after Lily left, His 8 minute Econ 305 class, his 2 minute date with Stella,The Wedding Bride and everything he said about the universe, Him telling Lily she was a Grinch, His date with Blah Blah, His blind date with Jen from "Rewind"...Ted suffered quite alot throughout the show, but he gave us alot of laughs and his determination on his romantic quests were inspiring.

Mother: When she plays La Vie En Rose to Ted on the Ukelele was absolutely beautiful, Awesome character and actually added alot of spark to the show!...Would have loved more episodes with her.

Watched the last 5 minutes of the finale again. The sad part is the creators actually had 2 great endings.

It's like a video game where Ted had to choose either the "Mother path" or the "Robin path". Everything we watched the last 9 seasons lead us down the Mother path. And they absolutely nailed Ted's speech about how much he loved Tracy and that first meeting on the train platform was perfect.

But then they tried to shoe horn in the Robin path ending in 2 minutes. That last shot with Ted outside Robin's apartment could have / should have been iconic, but it has no context. It's a great scene, but it doesn't fit what we've learned about these characters.

I think if handled correctly either one of these endings on their own would of been great, but slapping them together in 5 minutes was a major let down.
          Good job! Good effort!

Re: How I Met Your Mother: Season 9 (The Final Season)

Never realized this, but characters are actually living out similar lives to their parents.

Barney: His dad lived same lifestyle Barney did, got some woman pregnant, was around for a few years(seems like maybe same would just happen with Barney too),then leave, and might finally settle down after all that.

Ted: His parents got divorced(not the same as one dying but still...) and his step-dad married his mom, who used to be married to his best friend(similar to Ted going after Robin, who was married to his best friend)

Robin: Her parents were married, and eventually did get divorced(seemed like they were hinting at same thing with Robin/Barney too before wedding), and Robins dad eventually did get remarried later into his life(sounds like same thing is happening to Robin too)

Marshall/Lily would also be similar to Marshalls parents too(who I believe also did have 3 kids)

I can't think of any specific lines off the top of my head, so I'll go moments.

Barney: Does "The Playbook" count as a moment? Because that was pretty great - definitely my favorite Barney. Runner-up would be the perfect week.

Marshall: Like you, I liked the "Lawyered" moments. That's the first thing of his that comes to mind.

                  Robin: Robin Sparkles/Daggers

Ted/Mother: Are the same moment for me. I really, really liked their official meeting on the train platform. It might stand out more now since it's fresh in my memory, but they nailed that scene.

Lily: None. I always thought the character was annoying.

They spent 6 seasons successfully convincing me they were wrong for each other and then undid it.

I hope that the extra stuff they cut showed Robin changing and has more of Ted and the mom. Otherwise it doesn't matter.

Robin having all those dogs I think shows she was at least in NYC a lot more, otherwise why would she have dogs if she wasn't ever there.

There was a connection there but they were just never meant to be. Even in Season 2 when they get together, there's signs that it's not going to work. And I remember it being more than just Ted wanting kids at the time.

I don't totally hate the idea of him ending up with Robin or even at some point going back to her because he always has loved her and she was his first true love. I just think they executed it really poorly and it came off more as an ending that went for shock value and having a twist just for the sake of having one rather than giving us the perfect ending.

Imagine they had cut to Ted saying "and that, kids, is how I met your mother" then Tracy comes into the room carrying a baby, leans into Ted and kisses him then says "c'mon Ted, it's your turn to put Leia to bed" or something like that. Hell, no baby, just have her come in and say "is the story finally done?" or something to that effect.

Yeah, that would have been better.

Or even just have her coming home from a trip or something(she's an author or something isn't she?Just make it like she went to a few cities for a book signing or something random like that and to kill time until she came back,Ted just told the kids stories).

Show really should've just ended with Ted finishing the story and then having the mother walk in and maybe afterwards, they all head out to some reunion with the rest of the gang for their first time together in years. Yes, would've been abit cheap having the show end with 2030 versions of the gang along with their kids meeting up for the first time in years, but it's much better than how it actually did end.

You are missing the point. I like the ending because you can see how he truly loved robin and was showing that to his kids. If you think about it it makes perfect sense.
