Man there's so many possibilities cause I feel like everything could have a meaning with it being basically a mini series. Can't wait for tomorrow, first time I can watch it live since i'm back home for break

Well it appears that a lot was made out of little details to try to make it some crazy ending that never came to fruition. I absolutely loved the episode, but was a little unsure about the very end cause I just thought somethings were missing.

However(correct me if i'm wrong) now that I think of it, when the family came for Marty she was wearing her wedding ring right? Plus the whole thing with Rust and his family was well done to show the road he's come in his life. Took a little more thinking, but yeah I absolutely love this show and not sure it can be topped for a while even from GOT.

Yeah, this is an all-time favorite for me, and it only took one season.

How about the past couple years McConaughey has had? Talk about a comeback.

But really, fantastic work by McConaughey, Harrelson, Pizzolatto, Fukunaga, just great.

Loved the finale, loved the series. Glad that I didn't look into speculation about the killer, because I think I would've been disappointed in the end.

A couple of things I'm curious about:

From Episode 4 (I think, spoilered just to be safe):

Marty killed that guy with the headshot after seeing someting in the house. I don't remember them saying what he saw. I always assumed it was a dead girl or kid or something, but did they ever say for sure in the show?

From the Finale:

What was the black hole/vortex thing that Rust saw just before he was stabbed? Are we to assume only he saw it and not Marty?

Marty shot the guy in the head because he found those kids, abused and half dead. He snapped.

The black hole thing, I presume, is related to his speech at the end about being surrounded by his family, it's representative of the fairly common imagery of the tunnel and light bridge to the afterlife. It was another hallucination (or not, if you choose) by Rust, there seemed to be no indication that Marty saw it at all. If Marty had seen it, I can't imagine a scenario where he doesn't say to Rust "WTF was with the black hole thing?"

He was horrified and enraged by what he saw and couldn't hold back. It happens to real cops. Plus they incorrectly thought they had solved the entire case at the time.

What I don't get it this:

Why did the real guy behind all this pose the victim that they found that started the whole case? If he hadn't done that he could have kept on going forever undetected. As far as I know that was the only victim he posed and it (eventually) got him caught.

The finale was pretty underwhelming. Definately did not expect everything to end so straightforward and upbeat. This show was really about the characters then the story. Kinda shallow the way they explained everything away in a matter of seconds in the hospital that they had spent 7 episodes building up. "oh yeah this guy Childress was a sick **** and he got a bunch of pedophiles to help him out".

I wondered about that too. Didn't make sense to me. Not to mention all these pedophiles this guy apparently got to help him for these rituals. Where were they? Are they on speed dial somewhere. I just find it weird that this guy was the yellow king and some sort of godlike figure and I figured he would have a cult yet he only lived in the house with his half sister there. I would think some of his accomplices would be living there with him. And how did the cops find out who helped him. He was dead and that woman doesn't look capable of providing any useful info.

I already said it once, but I'll say it again: season 1 of True Detective is one of my all-time favorite shows.

Maybe I'm just a sucker for happy endings, but given the philosophical nature of this show, I love the way it ended. The whole good vs evil theme really manifested itself fully, and I thought the final exchange between Marty and Rust was really great; such an awesome line to end it on. It's nice to have a more uplifting moment after all the darkness throughout this season. The whole existentialism theme was pulled together nicely.

I do wonder, though, if there will be any more references to the case from this season, since there were a few loose ends still left untied.
