Maybe that's why WB has instituted a "no joke" policy in their future movies so that aesthetically it can be over the top but the tone will still be serious.

(or has that rumor of the "no joke" policy been debunked?)

The Batmobile itself still looks plausible. The world around Batman, if DC were to ever launch a universe with him included (which they are), couldn't really stay that way.

Seriously though, some people panned MoS because it was still adhering to Nolan-verse themes. I actually liked the seriousness while making Superman more sci-fi and therefore, "realistic." People have to stop using "realistic," "too cartoony" etc etc. as a measuring tool for superhero movies.

That's one of the bad things about the Nolan Trilogy, a lot of people expect realism in everything. Realism should be based on the world/universe that the character is presiding, and Man of Steel set the stage for the DCU to follow.
