I will say the kind of arrogant superman of the new 52 is intriguing.

Superman has ALWAYS been arrogant to one degree or another. I mean, have you never heard of the term Superdickery?

I did not very much enjoy Man of Steel, but I know exactly what it sought to be: a reboot. He'll be saving humans and such in his own sequels, but first they wanted to establish the character. I'm sure there will be a sense of joy and wonder in future installments.
Who's Ralph Garman? Not sure bout that... Judging by the dark Knight trilogy... Superman will prob be less focused on every following movie

I feel like this could be a perfect Fight Club moment where I say: "He definitely said you'd say that, sir."

He's a comedian, actor, voice actor (Family Guy for one), and is co-host with Kevin Smith on podcasts. He and Kevin talk Man of Steel for about the same length of the movie itself, and Ralph was pretty dissatisfied for the same reasons you were (that they destroyed the essence of the character by trying to be different, making a light character too serious). It's an enjoyable podcast nonetheless.

Whether or not that's true (and that tends to be the case so they can showcase more villainous material as they've already set up the protag), that doesn't mean he can't now do the kinds of things he does in other Superman films. Granted, I don't even really like this character to begin with, so what am I saying?

Never did like Superman. Too stale. What's the point if all he does is win win win no matter what?

He rarely has any challenges, never has anything to redeem, no doubts about if he can pull it off. Then there's Batman, who gets his freaking back broken and is tossed into a pit-prison and is forced to climb his way out to defeat the guy that kicked his *** in one-on-one combat and broke his back in the first place.

Batman is and always will be better and "less boring."

Death of Superman is pretty great.

All the good Supe tales hit on his alienation and anxiety over being an accidental savior to a race of people that would rather have him killed if they could do it.

...you didn't include any reasons for me to think he's not boring, though. Even as a child, HUGE superhero fan back then, I never felt anything for Supes one way or the other. I always knew he was the leader and there was a good reason, but I never felt compelled by this lame *** character who has one vulnerability, and it's something that could easily be destroyed, making him invincible. That's why everyone thinks he's boring.

I didn't think it was that great.

That was it, no intriguing villain, no crazy dilemma for Superman, just punching.

All the people calling the character boring - how familiar are you with his stories? I'm by far a bigger Batman fan, but Superman is a great character when handled with the right writers.

I can understand the apathy for Superman but not the hate. Superman can produce some very good stories with the right people behind it. Check out All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison and tell me that's crap.

I think the problem with Supes is that most writers today don't know how to use him. Although I like the direction DC has gone in actually going through with a Supes/Wonder Woman romantic relationship. Superman is not a grim and gritty character. He's there to inspire and instill confidence in people. I know Morrison toyed with it a little in his run in the New 52 by having Supes be there for the little guy and essentially that's what the character was originally created as.

Superman was created to up end the status quo and be a rebel to the establishment. In short, he's a populist hero who takes it upon himself to right the wrongs of society. That kind of characterization is not very popular these days but it's what Simon & Shuster brought to the character all those many years ago and it's what got people to fall in love with the character in the first place. Superman is not supposed to make The Powers That Be feel comfortable and safe, he's there to keep everyone on their toes and to do the right thing.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I just don't have a good vibe coming from this.

I'd love for there to be a good Justice League movie universe, but I can't shake the feeling that DC/WB is just winging it, trying to capitalize on/catch up to Marvel. I'll be more than happy to be wrong.

I really want a Justice League Dark movie as well.

Times change, new superheros are written, old superheros are retired. But Superman... Superman never changes.
