This show is suffering from its addiction to killing off characters. Opie was an awesome character. I thought Hale was great, and Roosevelt was a decent enough replacement, but they killed him off too. I even thought Piney brought something to the show, even though he was always on the periphery.
Above all though, even though SOA has always been about Jax's "story," Clay was always the most important character to me, at worst 1a to Jax. Basically writing him out of last season (up until the point they actually killed him) and having him (obviously) completely gone this year has damaged this show very badly.
Ever since we found out very early on that Clay and Gemma were behind JT's death, the backdrop of the show was always about Jax eventually finding that out; it was supposed to be the climax of the entire series. Except he found out about it a couple seasons ago, and there was never a big payoff, and the show has dragged on.
The first few seasons were A+ top of the line awesome to me. But Sutter's addiction to killing his characters robbed it of momentum over the last couple years. Now it's just a "whatever" show to me. I'll still watch it every Tuesday until it's over, but it lost something these last couple seasons.
