Re: Top 10 HBO Series of All Time
I tried. I found it to not be very interesting, although I respect the acting chops on display.
What was really un-watchable (to me, obviously) was the mini-series "The Corner". It was David Simon's first run at a Baltimore inner-city treatise of sorts (not counting "Homicide", which was excellent), and I forced my way through the whole thing. It was brutal. If you're into non-stop misery and the wailing of the drug-addicted down-trodden for 6 hours (or however long it was), feel free to give it a shot if you ever find it anywhere.Comment

Forgot about that one... I actually did and liked it.

It is pretty depressing, I will agree with that.Comment

Re: Top 10 HBO Series of All Time
The Corner was amazing... for what it was. Gotta remember it's based on a true story, and is an unfortunately accurate depiction of life in that area of Baltimore. It's funny how people view the city based on The Wire when The Corner is the one that really digs into what it's like in that area of West Baltimore.
It is pretty depressing, I will agree with that.
As a side-tangent, it is a little annoying that people think they know anything about the inner city and urban problems in America because they watched "The Wire". There may have been aspects of the writing affected by real-world events, but at the end of the day, it was a TV show, nothing more. That's like saying you understand Hawaiian culture because you watched "Magnum, PI". (although I friggin' loved "Magnum, PI" so don't hate on my man Thomas Magnum)Comment

100% agreement with you, wwharton. I don't doubt for a second "The Corner" was a much more accurate portrayal of day-to-day life in the city. Which is probably why it was so un-watchable for me (insert your own social commentary here).

But yeah, I can imagine why The Corner would be unwatchable for a lot of people, can't argue with that. But it is well done (gift and a curse I guess).Comment

Re: Top 10 HBO Series of All Time
I finished up the first season of The Sopranos last night. It had been at least 4-5 years since I've gone through the series so my timeline is a little bit jumbled and everything felt fresh and new. The last 3 episodes were all amazing. First the "rat" news, then the attempted hit, and the fallout. What a fantastic way to end a season. I even had to give a mental fist-pump for Carm telling off Father Phil.

I need to watch that sometime. I always loved Edie on The Sopranos.
The only thing I've seen Father Phil in was his appearance on Mad Men as a hobo who visits young Don Draper.

What ever you thought of the Carmella character, Falco nailed it. She was at the top of her game during the several episodes that dealt with her "Furio Infatuation".Comment

Re: Top 10 HBO Series of All Time
Just finished Entourage.
Was thinking of starting Game of Thrones, but might go with The Sopranos next. Maybe a series that's a bit shorter after blazing through 8 seasons of Entourage. Vinyl, maybe?NHL - Philadelphia Flyers
NFL - Buffalo Bills
MLB - Cincinnati Reds

Vinyl is in its first season. Easy to get caught up.
Sopranos is great, but after season 4 it starts to drag IMO.

Re: Top 10 HBO Series of All Time
Maybe Silicon Valley. Only 2 seasons in, something like 10 episodes a season and they are a half hour each. The first season is 8 episodes, 2nd is 10. And the third season just started this weekend.Last edited by redsox4evur; 04-26-2016, 10:50 AM.Comment
