So it looks like no season three. Sounds like Pizzolatto will be involved in a different show for HBO so we might still get something similar.

S2 was one of the biggest drop offs in quality in a show I can remember. Still kinda wish they would've given S3 a shot but after how S2 got trashed I can't blame them.

Bummer. I liked S2 a lot. Not nearly as much as S1 of course, which was a ****ing masterpiece, but I was definitely hoping for a S3.

      Lame.

        Seriously?
I'll admit I disliked Season 2 as well. And I fully agree the drop-off was huge.
It had it's moments (Ray basically stole the show), but overall I'd probably never watch it again.
But that might be because I loved Season 1 so friggin' much.

Hopefully they can reboot the series down the road.
I also hope this is a lessen to HBO execs to never rush quality again.
And perhaps they shouldn't cast someone like VV in a serious role. Everytime he was in a scene, I kept expecting him to do something funny.

It will never happen, but I would love to see them do a True Detective Season 1 Part 2 or something. Give Pizzolatto a team of writers and 2-3 years to come up with a decent script. Getting Mcconaughey and Harrelson back together would be TV gold. There's still plenty of avenues that they could explore from the original story just by basically tying up all of the Red Herrings they threw out there in Season 1.

Outside of Game of Thrones HBO has struggling lately, especially when it comes to good dramas. Something like this for 2018 (which is presumably when GoT will end) or 2019 would give them an automatic bump in viewership over a new unknown show.

HBO and Nic Pizzolatto have some kind of deal where I believe if he were to make another show it would be on HBO. As far as I know he only writes true crime type stuff so I'm not sure what else he would be involved in except a True Detective type show.

Season 2 had some decent moments but too much of it was just bad. The ending with Ray could've been easily avoided. There was that one guy who worked for Vince Vaughn's character (still don't remember who he was; there was a really popular article that had to explain who he was and why he was important because the show didn't) that had maybe 30 seconds of screen time whose death was supposed to be a big deal.

Overall there were just too many characters and plot lines that weren't given nearly enough time but were very important (or too much time but not being important) and obviously the dialogue was absolutely dreadful for parts, especially anything with VV and his wife.

VV being called Larry Bird while dying in the desert (also could've been avoided) was probably the high point of the entire season. Halfway through I stopped caring about the murder entirely.

Probably could've done without an overhead of the freeway every 10 minutes too.

              2015: 80-82
2016: 96-66 - Lost Game 7 of WS (18 innings to Red Sox)
2017: 93-69 - Swept by Red Sox in World Series
2018: 100-62 - Swept by Dodgers in NLCS

No, it's ahead of My Mother The Car.

EDIT: Seriously, there are a lot of worse shows that have been put out there, including My Mother The Car, but this was bad enough to kill a franchise.

Looks like Season 3 is still a possibility:
                  http://www.forbes.com/sites/brandonk.../#4ca4b15a6847

Casey Bloys, who recently replaced Michael Lombardo as president of programming, revealed during HBO’s Television Critics Association press day that a third season of True Detective is still very much a possibility.

“It is not dead, but there’s no take on a third season yet,” Bloys said, according to Vulture. The new HBO shot caller did, however, say that he is open to someone else assuming the writing duties for a third season while creator/showrunner/occasional malcontent Nic Pizzolatto fulfills the other requirements of his lucrative overall development deal with HBO. Pizzolatto would then oversee True Detective from afar.
