    Disney/Pixar's Inside Out (2015)

    Comes out June 19th.

Discover reviews, ratings, and trailers for Inside Out (2015) on Rotten Tomatoes. Stay updated with critic and audience scores today!

Try and save watching many of the in-depth trailers for the film itself. The TV spots hold out on what will really make this one shine IMO (the emotional aspect).

Looking forward to Pixar doing something original again. Brave was sadly a bust, so let's see if it can find what UP gave us and be splendid again.

Yeah, haven't read full articles (staying away from most stuff on this), but hearing that it's possibly the best Pixar movie in a while....Looks great!

              Re: Disney/Pixar's Inside Out (2015)

So I saw this earlier today. Impressions are in the movies recently watched thread.

What I'm going to bring up is a question (put into a lot of words and using another film as an analogy) that is not going to be considered a spoiler if you have seen this trailer before:

              <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/seMwpP0yeu4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

              Okay, here goes.

I'm going to begin by speaking about Ratatouille, one of my favorite Pixar films that has one of my biggest annoyances, and it isn't a small thing really either. This was a film where we as an audience are able to suspend our disbelief and accept the fact that rats can talk, read, understand humans, cook, and operate a full sanitary kitchen at their disposal. Perfectly fine, that's the premise of the movie and I am willing to bite. Even if this means other animals aren't able to talk, that's still okay. They have presented the film as such, and we should be able to allow this principle to operate as said. The problem with this film lies with Remy's ability to be able to control Linguini's actions by tugging on his hair. This world is supposedly grounded in some sort of pseudoreality wth the rats, that's fine... but what makes this kid so special that certain hair follicles trigger neurons firing in his cerebellum and allows him to coordinate cooking maneuvers in such a delicate manner? Does anybody else in this world have this ability? How did it take him this long to discover this? In an otherwise very fantastic film, this part just does not make much sense at all and I really did not accept this portion.

Inside Out has something similar that I have a question about, that thankfully does not stoop as low as Ratatouille. As you can see in the that trailer above, other people also have the same five emotions that Riley has. She is not a special individual who has these. It seems to appear that all living things in this world have these emotions. I'm very glad they never let the emotions have five emotions in their heads as well, that would have been overkill. On that note, they have already surpassed Ratatouille in not making Riley special. Anyway, the trailer also shows that Joy and Sadness get lost from "headquarters," therefore Riley can no longer feel emote via joy or sadness... makes sense. My question is, as these personified emotions are obviously represented in a metaphorical sense and can't really be taken as literal in our real world, how are we to interpret a real life scenario where somebody immediately loses emotions in their lives? As the film's stakes seem to be regarding these two emotions possibly not returning to her mind ever, what diagnosed condition is this portraying in our world that would explain what she is going through, and what would it take from the outside-in (as opposed to the other way) for her to get these back again? Is this the onset of a psychopathic individual?

Just trying to put a real life spin on the whole scenario in this film where I can obviously accept the emotions concept (especially since Riley is not a special case and everybody has the same ones), but for the sake of the film's stakes being what they are, I want to connect this with what we're supposed to feel for Riley herself should she not ever feel joy and/or sadness again.

Thanks for anybody who can help out.

Interesting take. I don't know that psychology or neuroscience has identified how emotions are triggered, or lost, in the brain. There are ideas about how psychopathy develops, but nothing is known for sure. Psychopathy is usually associated with a lack of emotional connection with others, not necessarily a lack of emotions themselves.

With what you're trying to describe, I would think only some kind of major trauma would cause the complete loss of emotion. The mind's attempt to protect itself from damage. This could lead to all kinds of diagnoses; possibly psychopathy, dissociative identity disorder, types of schizophrenia, etc.

Is this what you're looking for?

I have a 14 month old. I don't see him sitting through the whole thing so we will wait for DVD. At this time he only pays attention to TV when Chuggington Theme song comes on.

Thanks, I'm thinking in terms of that I guess. Somebody else suggested that depression is really a state of lacking joy or sadness, as it's more of emptiness. I never really thought of it like that.

The other thing I never really thought of (and this is what will probably make me buy the film on Blu-ray in the end) is watching this film from the mindset that the girl controls the emotions to do what they do naturally, not the other way around (in other words, the emotions aren't playing director and making her do things, that's just the progression of her life doing what needs to be done). This would explain why Sadness needs to get a grasp on all of the joyful memories.

I still think the middle part of the film is paced way off though, and I'm also interested in watching an edit of this film that just has the real world. Sadly, that film would probably only be about ten minutes long.

I think it was pretty good, but not quite up there with my favorite from Pixar.

I also had read that I should expect emotional scenes that hit you hard like in Up, throughout the whole movie. Nope, nothing even close to that scene for me.

I thought the Lava mini movie was better than the main feature personally.

I felt way more for that damn volcano than I did for Riley. Lol
