I'm on the other side of the fence on this one. I didn't think it was cast very well. It seemed like they threw together a great number of recognizable Hollywood figures, but I think it would have been better served by just a few with a lesser known cast. They just didn't cut it as astronauts for me. Hated the sound track. Seemed forced into the scenes as we went along and my hating disco didn't help. The CNN broadcast seemed very phony and the "live" broadcasting of the NASA/spacecraft conversations were just highly irregular and unrealistic. Just wasn't feelin' it overall.

Maybe this would have served better for you to read the book before the announcement of the film, then. Sounds like the story could have been there for you with changes that were, for the most part, left up to your own visual interpretation of them.

Other than Donald Glover being horribly miscast as a socially awkward space genius and the usual hard to believe moments that happen in space movies(Iron man, really that works?) this is a very solid movie. this might be matt damon's best performance of his career(even better than team america lol). I put this in my top 5 movies for this year.

The casting didn't bother me, but I wasn't a fan of the ongoing disco joke (or the music).

Doubtful, and it shouldn't be a requirement of the audience to read the accompanying book to alter their perspective for a movie. A movie should stand on its own. Just wasn't for me.

Even though I liked this movie a lot, I totally agree.

Oh, I totally don't disagree with that. Though of course, you pick two different directors you might get two entirely different films. I'm just saying it looks like you found faults in the casting and such, so I was thinking maybe your opinion would have changed from a different "director," even if it was yourself.

I personally have not read the book.

We'll never know...maybe I'm getting pretty cool in regards to Matt Damon movies too.

                        Re: The Martian (2015)

So of course I have to say I liked the book better than the movie, which is almost always the case with me. For those that haven't read it I highly recommend it. It's a very good read.

The movie is great. Considering so much in the book comes from watneys perspective in a journal/diary format, they had a difficult job in translating certain things from book to screen. I think they could have done a slightly better job building on emotional turmoil in watney (it shows up at the end, but I would have liked more) and the crew. For most of the people I wasn't sold that the characters really cared. Maybe it was just the acting. Just kind of flat. I also would have liked more emphasis from the book source material in detailing how monotonous and deliberate each day was for watney.

That being said, overall, depicting the science involved and representing Mars was done very believably (I assume, I mean of course I haven't been there) but I was immersed for sure.

Good job done though, all around, on bringing a great book to life

Well, that's even worse. It's neither a comedy or a musical. It sounds more like the industry knowing it wasn't going to beat out The Revenant, but wanted to make sure it won something.

                              Weak.

Now that I think of it, if you combine the genres, it works.

I just did not love this film. It was ok- I guess. I don't know if Damon deserves an Oscar nod for his performance though and I usually like Damon in everything. Cinematography was solid imo.
EA and 2k have the unfortunate task of trying to balance on a tightrope of fun and sim while trying not to fall 10,000 feet to their death. Instead of a safety net waiting down below there will just be angry customers quick to move out of the way and talk of their failure.
