This is the state of Hollywood today. I don't know why anyone would be surprised. Marvel/DC set the precedence for endless, empty movies (while still making a boatload of money) and a majority of folks expressed concern that Disney was going to milk every last drop out of the SW cash cow. A feeling of emptiness is inevitable when you dilute a franchise.
I also disagree that Han in this movie is the exact same Han we see in Eps 4-7. He's more trusting and his young love with Emilia Clarke has him damn near a hopeless romantic. That's not the older Han.
IMO the anthology movies have to be treated differently from the main episodes. None of them will blow audiences away, though Rogue One came close for me. I see nothing wrong with movies that fill in past details. Just because you know a character's ultimate fate (Han) doesn't mean there aren't interesting stories to tell. Nearly every Marvel/DC movie, you know the main superheros aren't going to die because the show (and money train) must go on yet people love those movies. It's even more ridiculous now where certain superhereos can die in one "story" yet be alive in others. Parallel dimensions or however you want to describe it.
