Re: Star Wars Episode VIII - The Last Jedi
I'm going to have to view it again soon. I enjoyed it. There were more idiotic, stupid things in this film that made me shake my head.
SpoilerLeia being Supergirl and flying through space. I mean, c'mon, seriously. And when Holdo speeds through Snoke's Juggernaut, how is it that Finn and Rose are the only survivors in that radius, while 100s' of storm troopers are dead, and also who does Phasma escape it to find more troopers, lol? Oh and there was magically one ship left unscathed. Stuff like that makes me laugh.
I can't wait to see it again though.Comment

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII - The Last Jedi
Spoiler
I'll preface this by saying Kylo Ren is lying to Rey and she isn't strong enough with the Force yet to see what happened to her parents on her own.
One of my buddies thinks the vision in TFA was Rey's past and future. She's seeing Luke's Jedi school burned down because she was there. She was Luke's favorite student, he let her use his lightsaber in training (this explains her connection to it). She's the one survivor of the attack besides Luke - she was either hidden or Kylo & his Knights weren't able to find her. Kylo is aware that Rey escaped and is still out there in the galaxy somewhere - this explains his weird outbursts at the report of "a girl" in TFA. This also explains Rey & Kylo's connection in TLJ.
After the attack, Luke became broken and decided the Jedi were finished. He needed to something with Rey. He used the Force to erase her memory (this is the one part of the theory that's a stretch, though after seeing the telepathy/projection stuff in TLJ it's not much of a stretch comparatively) and dropped her off on Jakku. He's the one in the ship we see leaving Jakku during her vision. He dropped her off on such a desolate planet because he knew it worked for him, he was safe for his childhood on Tattooine. She'd be hidden and safe from Kylo.
My buddy also thinks ghost Obi-Wan and ghost Yoda helped at the Academy, which is why we hear Obi-Wan saying "Rey! These are the first steps" in the vision.
My friend told me this theory after I saw TLJ so I need to re-watch it but he says that Luke's initial meeting of Rey makes more sense if you think about it from the perspective of this theory. He recognizes her and is messing with her to see if her memory came back and if she recognizes him.
I don't believe this theory will come to fruition but it's an interesting one and I'm sure there are more holes that can be punched in it. For one, Kylo probably would have a stronger reaction when he first meets Rey as a prisoner in TFA.

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII - The Last Jedi
Reading back through the thread and do see a lot of people loved the movie. I want to love it. Please explain to me how to be ok withSpoilerhow they handled Luke. Especially cheating us of an actual final showdown and instead him never even leaving the damn island. I hated that.SpoilerMaybe it's a bit of desensitization, but after seeing two previous combat sequences, I felt like they had to do something different. What they showed us is how powerful Luke was with the force, which I thought was something special. Of course, it did kill him so...
I guess what I'm saying is that there are a lot of other things they could have done that I probably would have preferred (at least on paper), but I am not disappointed with what they chose in the end either. But yes, that matchup looked promising. I like the angle Rian Johnson shot it at from the side making it look like an arcade game or something.
The one thing I didn't like, and I noticed it more on the second viewing, was the editing in cross-cutting Luke vs. Kylo, the resistance in the base, and Chewy w/ Rey flying over the mountain range. If you notice, they show the duel shot before the whole "They're stalling" talk and some flyover sequences, so in essence Luke and Kylo are posing for several minutes before they engage. You can't even argue it was occurring simultaneously, otherwise they would have already been fighting while the resistance folk were talking about finding a way out, and they would have witnessed part of the fight.
Instead, they should have had the escape & flying bits occur right after Kylo asks to be put on the ground with maybe some cross-cuts here and there afterward as well, but that way we stay on the engagement between Luke & Kylo nearly the whole time instead of having that weird delayed pause.Last edited by Blzer; 12-18-2017, 01:07 PM.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII - The Last Jedi
Totally unrelated to anything, but they should make a film where Adam Driver plays Javier Bardem's son, just by their voice likeness alone.
Spoiler
I thought it was Finn.
Based on TFA, it appears that human storm troopers are biometrically monitored. It's not a far fetch to think that includes being able to track them if they have the right equipment with them. He was still on the ship when they caught up to them at light speed, after all.
Also I noticed this the second time, when Hux first says "We have them tied to a string," the transition to the next scene shows Finn waking from his coma.
This may come up again in Episode IX, but I guess that's just a nice Easter egg from Rogue One. I also thought the beacon was a possibility, but I don't know how they would hack it or how they wouldn't use it to find Rey and Luke on the island as well.
I'm going to have to view it again soon. I enjoyed it. There were more idiotic, stupid things in this film that made me shake my head.

I can't wait to see it again though.SpoilerLeia flying isn't too far-fetched. Newton's laws of motion also apply in space, after all. All she needs is the least bit of force to nudge her forward, and she's set. Didn't help that it literally looked like Mary Poppins though, as in the shot wasn't very good. However, it doesn't explain how she was able to wake and survive in that environment.
Both times Holdo blasts through their ship, I keep misplacing the fact that Finn and Rose are also on that ship haha. Anyway, yeah it was awfully convenient that everything else worked out. Wasn't Phasma right next to them upon execution, though? It's like she was flown from that area of the ship onto another, only to find those storm troopers to descend on them again.Last edited by Blzer; 12-18-2017, 02:19 PM.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII - The Last Jedi
SpoilerI think Kylo is totally full of it. We will get a huge payoff IMO in Episode IX on who her real parents are. I have hard time believing anyone can have the force. There is lineage and bloodlines throughout the long vanished Jedi order. Even that kid at the end of the movie.....easily could be a long lost grandchild of a fallen Jedi. And this whole idea that all the Jedi’s were freaking monks and nuns is ridiculous. Then how did they continue the Jedi Order? Lucas was lazy in that regard. But if her parents were nobodies......and this is it. I am not a fan of that direction. Weak sauce.

I am going to agree with that.

SpoilerFirst being that it's hard to swallow that she's a rando strong with the force considering what happens when she touches Lukes saber,
but ok.
The other thought I had, Kylo tells her that her parents were Juko junkers that are buried in the desert, but in her flashback she's looking UP saying come back as if her parents are leaving on a ship.
But guess what? None of this matters bc I gurantee you JJ had a plan of who to reveal were her parents and I'm sure he'll just go back to this plan now in EP9 and say Kylo was lying.
And one more rant about Luke..
Spoiler
They planted so many damn seeds to make it believable that he could show up on the salt planet. The shot of his x-wing, he's got transportation. The rebels radioing for help, he knows where they are. When he showed up... that moment with Leia... when he stepped out to face Kylo. I don't know if I had ever been so hyped in my life. I was ready for the lightsaber duel of the decade. But no. A couple matrix moves and he's not even really there. I'm sorry, but I hate that.

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII - The Last Jedi
After watching the movie I thought it was good, but I also felt let down a little. I didn't like the forced comedy throughout the movie. Yes, Star Wars has comedy relief, but this felt forced and awkward throughout the movie. I have two theories about Luke and Rey.
Luke- I believe Luke had already passed and was there in spirit. When Rey touched the light saber in TFA this connected her and Luke. The Force showed her the ancient Island and the spirit of Luke was there. I think he wrecked his X-Wing years ago after the Jedi temple burned and he died in a crash.
Rey - I believe Rey is Han and Leia's daughter who was also training at the temple with Luke. After Kylo(Ben) burned the place down Rey was left. Luke took Rey to Jaku to hide her knowing this would be the last Jedi to save them years down the road.Comment

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII - The Last Jedi
I'm not only relatively young, but I also hadn't seen any Star Wars films for the first time since just a couple of years ago right before TFA. However, based on what I saw, I imagine many people were taken back to their childhood when...
Spoiler
Luke reunites with R2-D2. The way that Mark Hamill exclaims "R2!" with a bit of youthful glee and a smile on his face felt the most like anything we saw from Luke since the original trilogy. I mean it was almost like besides the wrinkles and gruff, Luke had actually never aged.
Great scene overall, especially with the callback to Leia's message that ignited everything.Last edited by Blzer; 12-19-2017, 01:18 PM.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII - The Last Jedi
Well after having days to process it and seeing it twice, I'd rank this movie on par with Episode 3. It's better than 1 and 2 but I'm not sure it's better than 3 because of how emotional and tense the final battle between Anakin and Obi was. Nothing in Episode 8 felt as emotional as "You were the chosen one!"
I'd probably rank them
IV
V
VII
VI
R1
III
VIII

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII - The Last Jedi
this is not your fathers jedi. while I enjoyed TLJ for what it was, its going to take some getting used to on these newfound(?) jedi abilities. but then, I got used to the zombie evolution of slow-walkers to the outright sprinting dead. its just that in The Last Jedi, so much has changed that its akin to sunlight having no effect on vampires. or when graboids began flying (Tremors). maybe Han Solo wakes up to start Episode IX (ala Pamaela Ewing in Dallas) and this has all been just a bad dream. in any event Episode VIII was a good movie but just probably not a good Star Wars movie.OSFM23 - Building Better Baseball - OSFM23
