Completely agree on your thoughts on Kylo Ren. I felt the same way about his motivations in regards to Snoke.

I actually really like Ren's character. He's incredibly powerful but it's like he's never had the proper wisdom/training to focus it on either good or evil.
He's like a hungry, tired toddler with a lightsabre.

I too hope he turns to the good side before all is said and done.

I agree with you, though it's interesting to see how subjective character and plot development is to folks. I've read a few essays about how great the character development is but I don't see it.

One of the biggest themes of TLJ was failure and the problem with how they tried pulled it off is that they had nearly every character fail at everything. When that's the case, you're basically going end the movie in the same place it started. The movie was a gigantic wheel-spinning-fest.

There of course was some character development as you guys have discussed but it's all pretty minor. When you juxtapose that with the lack of plot movement/development it stands out even more, in a bad way IMO.

This is the most important thing about any movie, and I wish the internet wasn't out to ruin stuff that people enjoy.

Think of how profound that thought is and imagine if people actually stopped doing that on the internet.

I'd almost argue that's exactly what the internet is all about... Ruining stuff that people enjoy. Because if I don't like it then I'm damn sure not gonna let you enjoy it.

How does being critical of stuff ruin it for other people? Do some people need 100% positive, like-minded, lock-step reviews as validation before being able to enjoy a movie or product? Does it make people feel bad to see that there are other people who don't agree with them? Have we really become this hive-minded?

I don't understand how some people not liking something while other people do is tantamount to the former "ruining it" for the latter. I'd offer that it's pretty normal for there to be likes as well as dislikes when a movie comes out, no? I also feel like this dynamic was present before Al Gore ever invented the internet.

If some people like a movie or product, more power to them and I'm not sure it should matter what others think. The internet existing to ruin things for people is a very interesting angle indeed.

I mean when someone says they like something, then another person comes along and says "No, it sucks, here's why". Like, why even chime in?

A: I really liked that movie. It was a fun watch.
B: Not at all. The pacing was awful, I found myself checking my watch every 3 minutes throughout the whole second act, the way they developed the ethos and pathos between two secondary characters was amateur at best, the writing was awful, I can't believe I wasted two hours on this clearly non-finished film.

Clearly, if Person A enjoyed the movie, then they weren't asking for Person B's film school, Siskel and Ebert movie review and critique.

              I'll just never understand it.

Person A - I think the Patriots are going to win the Superbowl

Person B - Are you crazy? No way. They don't get enough pressure on the QB and they lack big weapons on offense.

It's the same argument as the Star Wars one. Person A didn't ask for person B to chime in with why he thought A was wrong. It's a forum though and that what happens. In any kind of public setting you're inviting discourse any time you make a comment, no matter how harmless that comment might be.

I think a healthy debate with constructive criticism is good. With that said if you have the same people beating the same drum every other post and projecting their criticism as objective facts then that's very off-putting and tiring.

Fair points. OK. I see what you mean. I agree that people can overdo it in re-stating their criticism too forcefully (pun intended?) or too frequently.

The Force Awakens stunk. It took everything that happened in Episode VI and (and really IV-VI) and negated it. The world was in just as bad of a place in Episode VII as in Episode VI. It's because Episode VII is just a remake of the original trilogy with a modern spin.
