The Magnificent Seven (Remake / Denzel - Pratt - D'Onofrio)

So, yes, the remake of one of the most iconic Western flicks of all time has finally been done. Star value wise this doesn't pack the same punch as that line-up of Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn and James Coburn w/ Eli Wallach as the baddie. But then again, there was something at times to be desired with the story telling in the original despite how endearing it has become and, of course, how engaging the theme song is...

So it seems like with Denzel, Pratt and D'Onofrio carrying the billing, the writing and screenplay will be largely important to make this one a success. Ethan Hawke can be a real hit or miss, so we'll see if he enhances it or drags it down. Matt Bomer from White Collar also seems to be one of the good guys and can be appealing. Peter Sarsgaard (Black Mass / Jarhead) might bring his gritty-twisted mystique to the project as well. The trailer definitely shows it as having some promise.

Next up? The Dirty Dozen? I would welcome a legit attempt at it.

Trailer starts off really strong, then seems to fall off flat really quickly.

Consider it... considered. If I stopped about thirty seconds in, I would have went Day One.

A little disagreement...At about 1:15 House Of The Rising Sun kicks in, and I thought it was very effective. In my book a B+ trailer.

D'Onofrio? Denzel and Chris Pratt are this movie's star power.

Oh, the trailer was great, but the movie looks it will get a bit hokey and over-the-top for what I thought it might have otherwise had going for it.

I'm not saying he's the movie's A1 star in this, but D'Onofrio is a true talent and highly recognizable actor to many, especially now after his brilliant performance in the Daredevil series. His portrayal of the psychotic Gomer Pyle in Full Metal Jacket and as the bug man in Men In Black makes him a legitimate acting force. Again..yes, he's not Denzel..... but let's not quibble about it.

Not sure if there is a need to call this movie the Magnificent 7, but we'll see how it shapes up.

They have to pull it off, and the way a lot of movies are going now a days the odds are against them.

No quibble, but he's not mainstream recognizable, and his name doesn't help either. Hopefully he gets more recognized after this one.

LOL, I was rethinking it and he could actually pull in some younger people who saw Daredevil (yeah I know..young and old watched it).

Having said that I hope they go the "R" route but it'll probably be PG13.

I'm hoping The Dirty Dozen won't be far behind. They're going to have to come up with another mission beyond knocking out a communication center (zzzzzz). But, there's enough star power around these days to match that all star cast.

I'm not a fan of remaking old movies but let me just touch on Blzer's point about the trailer. I've seen the original film and let's just say, that movie wasn't a blueprint for great script writing. The movie was strictly based on the star power of the actors. This looks like its taking the same approach. Nice to see Denzel in the Yul Brynner role as I think he has the gravitas to pull it off.

I doubt this will be one of the better films in the mini western cycle we're seeing but it will be a good "turn off your brain" kind of flick.

I'd be okay if this movie was more on the Silverardo side of things compared to the original.
If it's done right, it could work really well.

I'm just so grateful that we're seeing a small reconnaissance of western films.
I adore the genre so the more we get, the happier I am.

It may be time that someone revisited the Lonesome Dove series.
I'd love to see a great director work with Streets of Loredo.
That's still my favourite western novel of all time and I believe it would translate extremely well in today's age of film where grit and realism are more apropos than ever.

                        Era of the Western??

Ethan Hawke is going to be in two westerns in the same month.
In a Valley of Violence is set to release a week before the Magnificent Seven:

                            Yes.
But since I'm a giant western nerd, I'll waive my disgust for the Magnificent Seven.

And I'd be all over a Lonesome Dove Trilogy reboot on the big screen.
Street of Loredo would be incredible if it was given an edgy, gritty slant.

                              Pretty much,

However since we're talking Westerns in this thread (it's also one of my favorite genres) I'd LOVE to see a remake of The Shootist with Sam Elliott or Tommy Lee Jones in the JB Books role. If you haven't seen it I'd urge you to. It's John Wayne's last film and it never fails to make me feel misty eyed. I think a somewhat grittier (not darker mind you) treatment of it would be awesome in this day and age.
