    The Night Of (HBO)

Has anyone else watched this yet? They have an early screening of the first episode up right now on the HBO Now App (and On Demand).

Decided to give it a go last night, and I got hooked, especially towards the end. It is very well shot, great mood/setting, realistic set pieces, etc.. May seem a little slow at first as it builds the premise/character development for the main, and the nuanced pieces go into place, but the last 15-20 minutes definitely has me itching for more.

Scary part is, this could happen to someone.

Watch The Night Of (HBO) on HBO Max. Plans start at $9.99/month. Explore the dark corners of NYC's criminal-justice system in this miniseries about a young Pakistani-American man who is accused of murder.

The Night Of is a British/American eight-part HBO and BBC Worldwide television miniseries based on Criminal Justice, a 2008–09 British television series. The miniseries was written by Richard Price and Steven Zaillian, and multiple episodes were directed by Zaillian. The Night Of will premiere on July 10, 2016. The first episode premiered early on June 24, 2016, via HBO on-demand.
Nasir 'Naz' Khan is a Pakistani-American college student living in Queens, NY. Using his father's cab one night, Naz meets a young woman. But what starts out as a fantasy ends up a nightmare, as he's arrested for murder shortly after leaving. Following an interrogation by detective Dennis Box, Naz asks for a lawyer--and finds one in world-weary defense attorney Jack Stone.

Looks good. I see that it is a limited series (looks like eight episodes).

Yeah. Only going to be a one off mini series. But they may build upon it with different spin offs (since this is a Criminal Justice spinoff already), featuring different incidents/accused if successful I am sure.

I guess HBO gave up on True Detective? That should have been just a mini-series as well. The first season was excellent. Then the second season fell into the toilet. I'm figuring that HBO doesn't want to make the same mistake with this series.

I believe this was discussed in the TD thread, but basically yes.

          Coles Notes version:
Season 1 was awesome. HBO forced writer to write Season 2 super fast to capitalize.
Season 2 sucked (by and large).
          Franchise is now tainted.
          Franchise cancelled.

The writer is supposed to be working on something else for HBO now.

It's surprising that it went this route. Normally HBO seems to have a good handle on not sacrificing quality for quantity.
But clearly they screwed up with the TD franchise.

I am absolutely stoked for The Night Of.

Wow, that was something. I'm sorry I have to wait eight days for the second episode. I can see that John Turturro is going to be great in this.

Excellent first episode. Not much else to say.

I like how it's being pushed as a nightmare scenario. This could happen to anyone.

But we don't actually know what happened, we don't know who is lying or pretending not to know information.

To discuss the mini series a bit:

I find it intriguing that the guy that spotted Nas in the police precinct told police he was alone when he saw Nas with the girl.

Not to mention the guy he was with definitely stared hard at Nas. So I suspect there will be some red herring about that guy possibly being involved in the murder.

And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Also the fact that the back door was left swinging open when she put the cat outside.

The more I think on it, Nas's lawyer will probably try to look for an ex or abusive boyfriend. The girl was clearly messed up in some way.

Buy or sell the hard starer was a former lover?

I agree with JayBee. That stare was stalker-esque not necessarily ex boyfriend.

I also think that a different knife was used. I don't think the killer would have picked up the knife they used to play mumblety-peg, gone upstairs and used it then brought it back down stairs and put it on the table.

                              Those were my thoughts exactly.
Also wondering if the two idiots who jumped in his cab may have somehow followed him?
That's a HUGE stretch I realize, but just trying to think of all the possible suspects.

But as you stated, who knows if Naz really isn't the killer?
He consumed a pill he knew nothing about and partook in coke and booze - two things he didn't seem that experienced with.

All in all, GREAT first episode. Loved it and can't wait for Ep2.
