Re: Alien: Covenant (2017)
Alien and Aliens are absolute classics.
Alien 3 is vastly underrated
Alien Resurrection while not great, is entertaining.
Prometheus IMO was awesome. And I look forward to that sequel as well.
I think this movie will be really good. They waited a long time to get another true Alien movie out (AVP IMO is not in the same cannon). It's been since 1997.
Very curious where they take the series here. Now Playing on PS5:

Re: Alien: Covenant (2017)
Aliens is still one of my favourite movies. Heck, it might very well be my favourite movie of all time. I think I've seen it well over 100 times.
I really hope this film can return to the original stream of the story. Really looking forward to it.
*One odd thing about Aliens is that there are two versions. When I was a kid, I didn't understand how when I rented it, sometimes I got the scene where they setup those gun turrets in the hallways but with other rentals, it wasn't there.
Found out later that one was the extended version. I made sure to always choose that one when renting.
P.S. I've always felt that an X-Com type game could have been made using the Aliens universe where you travel to different systems and rescue colonists and salvage facilities.Comment

Re: Alien: Covenant (2017)
Of course I realize that all of this is subjective. I can only agree with half of your choices here. I'm sure most critics would agree that Alien has reached classic proportions. The cast, the originality of the creature (and how it arrived), the atmosphere in which it was shot, the manner in which the crew interacted with each other, the moments of intensity. Ridley Scott directed an absolute masterpiece.
Aliens, on the other hand certainly had its moments of intensity, but they had to go for a different kind of novelty, of course, since the alien was out of the bag. The caliber of the cast could not hold a candle to the original. Don't get me wrong, I understand why it's a beloved movie, but it can't be for the same reason as the first one.
First off, Paul Reiser was the absolute worst cast member of the film. As of that era, he was a comedic actor (whom I loved in Diner), which he does well, not a corporate scumbag. The other major problem with this Cameron version is that it had more campy moments (Bill Paxton's "we're grated cheese man.... game over, man"), so to speak, versus the gritty, organic, real feel of the first one. In short, at times, it was looking too polished and over-dramatized (the Marines getting ready for battle, the lighting on the vehicles). But of course, the mother Alien battle vs. the mechanoid was pretty intense and cool (and of course, we all wanted it at the first sign of the mechanoid).
It's not that I didn't like Aliens. I just can't put it near the same level as Alien.Comment

To each their own.
I really liked Alien but Aliens is probably my favourite movie of all time.
Loved the action, the acting...all of it.
I'm not sure there's one thing I didn't like about it.
I'm really hoping Alien Covenant is more the same - in regards to the Marine theme.
Judging by that screen cap I'd say it will be.
So jazzed for this film.

Two completely different movies.
I love both of them for many and quite different reasons. I agree nothing tops the intensity, acting, atmosphere and pacing of the Ridely Scott original sci-fi horror masterpiece. It stands alone and I agree with that.
What I love so much about Cameron's Aliens is exactly the opposite approach of the original. This time it's war. The pacing is fast and furious, the acting has great comedy throughout, the transformation of Ripley into a bonafide bad *** was awesome to watch. The entire cover up of the species, the colonists etc. Also the Directors Cut really opens up the Nute storyline and brings it full circle. I loved Paxton's character as well as Corporal Hicks. All of the main marine characters were very memorable. It is also considered a classic IMO and widely loved as the best movie in the series.
I loved the original the most (as do you) but I also consider Aliens about as good a sequel as you could ask for as it was totally unexpected. It arguably out shined the original for many and was let's say more accessible.
A great film in it's own right and the cool thing is......I can watch any of the Alien movies (1-4) anytime they are on cable. One of my favorite series of all time.
Each film had it's own approach and feel.
Alien - Isolated, pure horror and suspense, a masterpiece.
Aliens - A war movie at heart and the character transformation as Ripley finds her inner "Rambo" and shows her motherly instinct and in the end it was a battle between two very protective mothers.
Alien 3 - A prison flick....plain and simple. And it rocked.
Alien Resurrection - A Frankenstein monster movie IMO. A real ode to the mad scientists who created monsters. Three were created from just the DNA of Ellen Ripley. #8 (Ripley clone), A new Queen and the Hybrid Alien Born from the womb of the Queen mixed with her DNA and Ripley's.
