I don't know who a lot of these superheros are so this is intriguing for sure; Civil War is the reason I watched Ant Man recently.

I really hope there isn't some extended plot line with Vision and Scarlet Witch...all these superheros and I have a feeling this odd romance will take up way too much time.

So I joined the MCU late, my first movie was The Avengers where I had no backstory, no idea on the story or some of the characters. I have since seen all the Avengers, all three Captain America's, and Doctor Strange. I want to be well informed and watch everything I need to in order to fully understand Infinity War, including rewatching ones I've already seen.

My question is, I don't want to watch every movie in the universe because I've heard some are not the best and not relevant to the main story line. What should I watch in preparation for Infinity War to fully understand it?

I'd say watch every movie except: Hulk, Thor 2, and Dr. Strange.

To me Doctor Strange is kinda important to the story. Introduces one of the Infinity Stones.

Ture, but meh. I went back and watched it after watching everything up to date and didn't feel like I missed anything after watching it. And I feel like I need to be on acid or something next time to enjoy it.

Although Marvel on film has had to take certain understandable liberties with contracts, time frames involved and budgets, etc., re: your spoiler:

This is a storyline true to the bronze age of comics (70-85) which was pretty daring at the time: a human in love with an android. Vision was originally a reincarnation of the original Human Torch from the 40's. I don't recall what spark the romance but they were an item.

Secondarily, I kinda like the Avengers logo as it showed near the end and it makes for a decent desktop wallpaper:

Honestly, I'd say you need to watch all of them because this universe has been building to this moment this entire time. Every movie in the MCU to this point has built to this film. If I were to single out the films that don't just completely stand out as a direct line to Infinity War, I guess I'd point to Incredible Hulk and possibly Ant-Man. Even then those are important films to the story because you're introduced to General Ross and his recruitment into the Avengers Initiative. The same would hold true for Ant-Man's importance, but I personally didn't finally watch Ant-Man until after I saw Civil War and I was never lost about the story unfolding there and who he was.

The other movies all have key components though for IW.

You'll need to watch;

For the Tesseract/Space Stone.

The Avengers
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Avengers: Age of Ultron
Captain America: Civil War

For the Chitauri Scepter/Mind Stone

Thor: The Dark World

For the Aether/Reality Stone

Guardians of the Galaxy

For the Orb/Power Stone

Doctor Strange

For the Eye of Agamotto/Time Stone

I'm sure either Black Panther or some point during the beginning of IW we'll find out exactly where the Soul Stone is. Probably Wakanda somewhere.

Even with those movies, you'll still need to watch Iron Man and Iron Man 2 for Stark, Black Widow and War Machine's intros and involvement in everything. You'll still need to watch Spider-Man: Homecoming for obvious reasons.

Obviously it's all your choice, but it's a tough ask to prepare yourself for Infinity War while skipping lots of building blocks that lead to why Infinity War is possible.

Wow Doctor strange is one of only 4 MCU movies I considered great. The other 3 being Spider-Man HC and the last 2 Cap movies. I find most of the MCU movies to be very overrated though.

I know they've said they won't be involved, but could you imagine if The Defenders or Agents of SHIELD show up?
