I'm pretty confident I've found it here.

I don't know if this is it, but holy **** I haven't heard this song in probably 20 years.

Also, while researching them, apparently they were created by the same guys that made the Spice Girls, and they thought they could pull off a boy band. They held an open audition, and Russell Brand tried out.

No way anyone's gonna get it from your descriptions...not that you haven't done as good a job as one can do describing a song in writing, but it's like trying to guess a car you saw based on what streets you were near when you saw it.

I think we can get it (I have faith!) but there's gotta be something we can go off in terms of any words (or even what you thought the words might be), a few notes, or something like that. Otherwise...I fear it's doomed to "what the h*ll song was that?" status forever.

Sorry to disenthrall your once again valiant effort in this pursuit, but that also is not it.

            I might have given up.

I mean I agree with you nine times over. But I feel like if there was a string of words that I had remembered, I would have found it before creating this thread.

The best thing that I'm trying to do right now is learn how to play an online virtual keyboard to the extent that I could recreate the main riff to the absolute best of my abilities, though the song definitely isn't played on a reverberated grand piano.

It feels like you're describing an early Maroon 5 song to me, but I'm not sure which one

You know what's funny? I kept second-guessing myself thinking that it was someone Maroon 5-like. It's not them unfortunately because it's just not early enough, and the voice wouldn't exactly match in that regard, but that actually could be one of the closer style genre matches with their early stuff. What would you call their music?

LOL....no, I get it - I realize if you had anything whatsoever to go on, you wouldn't have to resort to descriptions and impressions. I mean, I can just feel your frustration via the interwebs.
