Question about modem/router combo to replace my rental from Spectrum

So I currently have Spectrum internet with 100mbps down and 10up. I am using their rental modem/router combo for $7 and obviously that's not cost effective and lately I'm lucky if I am getting over 20mbps download speeds over WiFi.

I have been looking at some combo units to replace it, but there are so many and I don't even really know or understand what I need. I just want the most cost effective option that will give me close to the speeds I pay for.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I have anywhere between 6-8 devices on wifi at a time. And it's pretty spotty on the second floor. If that helps.

Recently had to get a new router as my old one was just not keeping pace anymore. Went with this one. It's pricey but rated as one of the best on the market. So far, I haven't had any issues and it runs pretty fast.

Thanks, but that's way out of my price range. I should have given a price range. I don't really need a lot of those features either.

My price range is $100 or lower. I really just need a solid wifi connection at acceptable speeds. I know they will probably be lower than ethernet, but I would imagine I should be able to get speeds over 20mbps.

And I just checked my speed and it was 5 mbps. I can't understand how that is even possible with what I should have. Maybe there is something technical going on. Either way though, I wanna get out from under paying monthly for their equipment.

Still more than your price range, but I got this for about $150.

I have Spectrum, and this is pretty great. I get over 130 Mbps in the room next to my router, and 80 Mbps in the basement.

I just switched to Spectrum myself, thought I didn't need a modem until I thought about where is the cable going to hook into on my router so I needed one from Spectrum. Another way I was able to save a little money was I didn't need 4 digital boxes like I thought I did. I have a Smart TV Samsung so instead of using a box for it I can just use the Spectrum TV app.

Yeah, when I has Spectrum TV I used the app on my other tv's. I have Directv now and the extra receivers were free.

I'm not sure what you mean though about needing one from Spectrum. You can buy a combo modem/router where the cable will will hook into. Maybe I read that wrong though.

You read it right, was going to get the equipment from them and didn't have a router/cable modem. The modem is free so just went on and got it, besides didn't want to spend the money on a really good modem when I didn't have to at least for now I don't.

                Ok, I gotcha.

And I contacted Spectrum and they ran diagnostics on my modem/router and did something and now I'm getting almost 100mbps on wifi.

I think I'm just gonna stick with their equipment for now.

Stupid question how can you tell if you're getting 100mbps on wifi?

And on the XB1, you can check your speed in settings->network. i'm assuming the other consoles have something similar.

Speedtest.net or Fast.com will measure your speeds. Speedtest has a mobile app, too.

Console speed tests are highly inaccurate though. Definitely don't want to go by that.

Could be. I can tell you that my XB1 and 360 matched what I got via my laptop wired to the same router.
