Re: Spider Man OUT of the MCU.

I liked Venom a lot but it doesn't hold up against the bulk of the MCU films. Hopefully Sony can capture that Spider-Man 1/2 feeling again, but they give us little reason to believe they can. They've got a pretty great cast, though we'll see how far they really go w/ Carnage.

The entire foundation of this current character and his villains are rooted in the MCU. Tony. SHIELD. Happy. An Avenger. The Stark-based origins of the Sinister Six.

Now we get to watch them soft reboot and piss it all away. For the Spider-verse, it kicks a chair out from under everything that connects the character to a decade of films. In the MCU, while popular, he's replaceable thematically.

Wouldn't be surprised if this unraveled to the point that it becomes a full reboot. Can't imagine writing a followup to Far From Home then being told you have to pretend there's no SHIELD, Avengers, Happy Hogan and other supporting cast you might want to help put the genie back into the bottle.

Assuming they don’t eventually work something out (I think they will), Sony will pretty much have to do a full reboot. And if it goes that route, Sony would be smart to reboot with Miles Morales.

A fourth Peter Parker, especially on the heels of Holland’s PP, isn’t going to go well, IMO.

^^ He's damn good ..... could definitely see him in some sort of situation comedy or dramedy movie.

I think the MCU wont skip a beat without Spiderman going forward. We had a strong run of 5 movies featuring him. Appreciate that we got him at all.

I would be more disappointed to hear there won't be a sequel to Into the Spider-Verse.

I'm of this mindset. I mean he was great in the shared MCU movies, but not the focal point. His snap was big, but going forward it's not like all of a sudden Thor is gone. They could probably write out most characters at this point to be honest.

I more think Sony's going to end up with a watered down movie at best, MCU fans might skip it since it's not part of it (the more casual ones perhaps, and the hardcore might be angry) so Sony's not going to make as much money (or even could bomb). This is a huge risk

New rumors about a possible proposal from Disney. A lot of stuff is WAY too good to be true, so I'm taking it with every grain of salt imaginable. Highlights in the spoilers if you don't want to read the article.

It is being rumored that Disney has offered Sony another deal over keeping Spider-Man in the MCU, which includes a seven-picture deal, new Avengers films and more.

The 7 new films rumor is recycled, FWIW. Might just be clickbait.

Spider-Man is about to swing back to the big screen next week. And according to a new report, Marvel might be planning many more iterations to come!

Only speaking on business terms, I think 30% is a lot more reasonable now. Before, Disney was just ACTUALLY producing solo films while Sony was fronting all of the cost and retaining 100% box office revenue. We'll leave the MCU movies out because thats all Disney, Sony had no business in any of those.

So, lets say for Far From Home, they had a budget of $160m, with a revenue of $1.1b. Under the old contract, thats $940m profit for Sony.

With the new proposal, its a cost of only $80m with a box office of $770m and a profit of $690m.

It's a lot less money forsure, but Sony has to realize that Disney needs incentive to produce these movies since they have so many new plans.

Personally, I think a sweet spot would be around a 85-90% Sony, 10-15% Disney cost and revenue, but thats just me. It all comes down to how much they think they'd profit from producing movies all on their own.

Marketing budgets are frequently as much as, if not more than the production. Your points stand, just shaves a bit of that margin off.

Yeah and not ever $ goes back to the studios of course has the theater gets to keep some of it of course. I have heard normally to break even a movie needs to make double its budget. So Far from home budget was 160 meaning to get back to even it needed to make like 320 million. So after that like 320 the movie started to make a profit.

None of this is Sony's fault, for those who just want to stoke that fire. Any studio would be stupid to go with the new deal Disney was haggling.
