Re: New Family Guy on tonight...

There's a thing called material. I don't know if it's just me, but I hate to see a show go down due to lack of material. I mean, you have to go somewhere new with your episodes all the time in terms of humor... maybe he's spreading it out more through some of the episodes.

One thing I don't want, though, is I don't want this show to stop making episodes because people think that these new episodes are "killing what the show use to be". Bull****. Go watch your other DVDs with old episodes. I keep coming back to watch this show now (I think) because I want to just watch the show. I don't only like the show for laughs... I just like to watch it. And I want to continue watching new ones. Let's hope they keep being made and aired.

As for this episode... I get to watch it in two hours. I'll let you know what I think.

I thought it was great. Definately one of the best this season.

        .
        A couple things

        1) I doubt that will happen (at least right now) because the show has made a lot of fans through the DVD sales when it went off the air.

        2) I hate to say this, but your sentiment is one of the reasons for THE SIMPSONS for falling off the table so much. People just loved watching the show out of habit. The writers and such had to stretch things so much in order to keep producing episodes. Now THE SIMPSONS is a shadow of its former glory tho I admit this season has been pretty good.

        3) As far as material goes...this is what happens when you build a show around pop culture references and toilet humour and neglect character development. Oh don't get me wrong some of the stuff this season has been LOL funny but there's no sense of character growth or development for the most part. Other long time animated prime time shows have seen their characters grow and develop to some extent. FG on the other hand is pretty much the same as the very first episode in terms of character

Well, I can't say for sure (considering I really never liked this show from Day 1), but my friends can vouch for you. Good point.

True, no character development. They don't grow up, so there's not much that you can determine with them changing. It's not a show that advances from one episode to the other. At least... I don't think so. Are Cleveland and Loretta back together? Because I remember that one episode where they declared a divorce.

Anyway, I don't know how much I'd enjoy one where there's actual character development. I mean, Meg hasn't really changed at all... but the world seems to hate her now (which I just crack up at every time). Brian has become much funnier, too. Stewie and Chris need to be able to have their own stories every now and then again. Right now it's a lot of Peter... which, of course, isn't bad. However, I admire variation.

At any rate, one episode in a season always has to be the worst; we just have to accept it and wait for next week.

This season hasn't been great by any means.

I'm liking American Dad more than Family Guy this season.

The problem with that last statement is that there is no way that this is the worst episode, not even close. I'd have to say it's my favorite this season after the FAA one.

Ah, but I don't mean character development in the conventional mold like dramas and even some sitcoms. I'm talking about development in terms how characters evolve whether it be through actual development in the traditional sense or from writers taking one aspect of a character and emphasizing it.

I'll give a couple examples which FG should try in order to make their characters be more fleshed out, both of these examples will be from THE SIMPSONS.

                  1. The traditional way: We've seen Lisa evolve from a brainy know-it-all to a more self conscious (sp) intelligent character who is aware of the world around her. This development was done through numerous episodes. In fact, for a while there the show was very Lisa-centric but it has worked in the long run because the Lisa character is by far the most complex and is very easy to have involved in storylines as an anchor for the rest of the family and other characters. Another example of the traditional development is the death of Maude as it moved Flanders away from the totally pious, overzealous christian and transforming him into a character that while still overly religious, now has doubts about God.

                  2. Development of characters through emphasizing an attribute: The best example of this is the couple of seasons where THE SIMPSONS was basically the "dumb, bumbling but in the end kind hearted Homer show". This was a period when Homer became so dumb and outrageous that you wonder if he could even put on his pants in the morning. Before those couple of seasons Homer was a bit of a dim bulb but he at least had some smarts in certain situations. Thankfully the writers de-emphasized that as it was really killing the show.

But you could argue that Stewie as a character has developed. In the first season or so he was an "evil genius" while intelligent he didn't have much depth besides his evil genius ****ck. But now, Stewie has evolved to the intelligent counterpart to Brian (see the numerous Stewie and Brian "buddy episodes"). But that is really the only character who has changed much.

It was a funny episode but not the best of the year (the last one I saw, I believe it was last week, was my favorite by far IMO this season)...still funny though.

Yep Stewie is the only one that has grown as a character which probably explains his huge popularity among fans of the show. He's by far my fave character.

That used to be my opinion as well. But with the new episodes, Brian is becoming my favorite character. The Hoover Vac bit had me rolling.
