It's getting to that point with me, as well. One of the main reasons I was so against FOX even bringing it back in the first place.

It took The Simpsons, what, ten seasons before it really got bland repetitive, Family Guy has already reached that point with only about three and a half seasons worth of episodes. Ouch.

That's the difference between THE SIMPSONS and FG. THE SIMPSONS took an approach similar to most other sitcoms in terms of how they structure the show. If you look at some of the best SIMPSONS episodes there is an element of reality. Yes you sometimes get outlandish sequences but the heart of the episode has something we can all relate to.

FG on the other hand is built up on pop culture references with very broad characters with no real backbone to them. I've found in the newer eps that they're over-relying on the pop culture stuff and hence the show is becoming a parody of itself.

I'm not saying I don't watch it anymore as there are still some VERY funny moments but the experience feels a bit empty. It's like you've just wasted 30 minutes of your life watching a show that has no real heart to it. If you know what I mean.

I totally get what you are saying. But even in the two shows heading down the wrong path they took similar routes. The Simpsons took a turn for the worse when the focus of the show jumped from Bart's shenanigans to Homer's bafoonery. Family Guy has started going downhill since it became less dependent on an actual storyline with wacky inter-cut antics and more so on the random skits with hints of an actual story at hand. Sure, in all the old episodes of The Simpsons, the star of the show was Homer but that's only because you never got him for the entire thirty minutes and he was always more of a strong support character. Then when the storylines started getting repetitive, the focus jumped to him so that they could try and put a new twist on the same episodes they'd already done two or three times. Same deal with Family Guy. You used to have a major storyline that took up 60%, a minor storyline that was 30% of the show, and about 10% of the show would be the random "hey, remember that time.." stuff. Now, it seems more like it's 15% actual storyline (all minor, no more major) and 85% randomness.

Yep I got into the downfall of THE SIMPSONS earlier in this thread. I've noticed that about FG now. I'd see comercials for an episode and they'd tell you what's going to happen and more often then not the story that was mentioned in the ad happens after the last comercial break!

Wow. Bring this up in 15 years and see which show lasted longer. I don't think you've watched The Simpsons much over the last couple of years if you're making a statement like that. By the way, I've been a big fan of FG since it was on FOX the first time around. I remember watching The Simpsons when they were short clips during the Tracey Ullman Show too. Been a fan since season 1.

So was there a new episode tonight? I saw a short clip with Peter unwrapping part of Lois's body cast to use as toilet paper. Is that in this new one?

Don't get me wrong, The Simpsons is one of the most influential pop culture phenomenons ever. I'm just saying right now FG is better than Simpsons.

And I don't get what most of you are saying that Family Guy is changing for the worse. If I watch an episode from this season, and then an episode from the past, I don't see much difference.

I will agree that there is a lot more random stuff thrown in there, but that's FG's thing, it's so freakin random that its hilarious.

When it encompases the majority of the episode, I gotta disagree. There is a huge difference style-wise between pre-final cancellation and post-return.

IMO, when it comes down to it, whether or not I laugh is basically all that matters to me. I could care less what the story is. I highly doubt that was ever the intensive purpose of this show (at least, not over the comedy aspect).

But then you're just laughing at a bunch of random jokes. Hell, most stand up acts are put together better than some of the Family Guy episodes this season.

It depends on what you enjoy. I don't like "black" comedy that they put out on Comedy Central, especially the Chappelle Show. I was so freakin' happy when it was off the air, but now it's coming back on. Oh well.
