Well. The announcement of the PS3 a few weeks ago got me thinking about where I was going to spend my next generation gaming dollars. I'd been happy with my XBox, but me not being able to play FPSers for extended periods of time (no Halo for me) I started thinking more about the games that would be available next generation and less about the actual hardware.
You see. One of the reasons I picked up the XBox in December of 2000 was because I felt it was better "hardware" than what Sony offered. In many ways it still is.
Built in hard drive (this is a must for next generation consoles)
4 controller ports
Built in ethernet
More memory
Powerful GPU
Better controller (Playstation controllers have ALWAYS been too small IMHO)
Just two weeks ago I traded one of my XBox in for a PS2 just so I could familiarize myself with some of the platform specific titles.
Let me just say that this little black box, when all is said and done, may be my favorite console I've ever owned.
Yes, all the hardware negatives I mentioned above still apply. I HATE not having a hard drive. You can't believe how much I hate it (and the fact that the only hard drive released by Sony won't work with the new, slim PS2s).
That said, I still love this baby. It's got half the muscle of the XBox, yet it has titles that compare very favoreably to some of the XBox best. Let me list the 8 PS2 titles I own.
1) GOD of WAR
2) Virtua Fighter Evolution
3) Madden 2004
4) NCAA 2004
5) Jak & Daxter
6) Gran Turismo 3-A
7) SOCOM II
8) Metal Gear Solid 2
All except for God of War were picked up for less than $20, most for less than $10.
I am having the freakin' console gaming time of my life. I literally feel like a kid again. Every frickin title is a A-grade title. I even thought Madden would suck compared to the XBox version, but the 2004 version of Madden actually has online advantages to it's XBox counterpart. Not to mention the fact that, even though the PS2 does have "jaggies", the brightness and colors on the PS2 stand out more than they do on the XBox. At least in the games I've seen.
I also picked up the wireless Logitech controller which is of a much higher quality than the standard DS2 controller that ships with the PS2.
Yep. This long time XBox fanatic is finding some true gaming joy with his new PS2 toy. IMHO it's the little (I'm talking 1/5th the size of the XBox) black box that could.
Gotta get back to GOW. Very good action title.
