Both consoles are great, but one of the most dominant consoles of all time isn't a must have for gamers? No console has sold as well as the PS2! It is a mass market, pop culture, icon.

And that is supposed to mean what? The ipod is a pop culture icon and it isn't a must have for music listeners.Originally posted by DondaddaBoth consoles are great, but one of the most dominant consoles of all time isn't a must have for gamers? If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)Comment

If you are a hardcore music fan, an Ipod, or an imitation product, is absolutely a must have . . . or would you rather waste money on crap albums with 3 good songs, or waste your time burning your own CDs?Originally posted by jmood88And that is supposed to mean what? Same with the PS2 . . . an absolute must-have for the hardcore gamer, and really the only must-have of this generation (although the XBOX is the best in terms of performance). 90 million gamers worldwide (that's NINETY MILLION - holy crap) can't be wrong.Been gaming since the Atari 2600, and hells no I won't stop!!!Comment

Re: Is it OK to like the PS2?
yup....90 million can't be wrong:
McDonalds burgers sell the most, so they must be the best
Windows has 95% market share, so that must be the best
...not a good way to defend your arguement.

Re: Is it OK to like the PS2?
First of all, the ipod is not a must have since you can buy other mp3 players and neither is the ps2. There are millions of people over the world who liked Britney Spears, does that make her a great singer? Numbers don't mean ****.Originally posted by DondaddaIf you are a hardcore music fan, an Ipod, or an imitation product, is absolutely a must have . . . or would you rather waste money on crap albums with 3 good songs, or waste your time burning your own CDs?

Re: Is it OK to like the PS2?
If you're a hardcore music fan, you already know which albums are going to be **** and which albums are going to be gold, plus if you're a hardcore music fan, you'll own as many albums as you can possibly purchase in your life. Mp3 players aren't needed for hardcore gamers, unless its a 30+gb space. The other "iPod imitation products" which sell better, such as the 5gb and lower models, are IMO, marketed to those who aren't hardcore music fans because they do not invest that much time/money into music.
Anyway, on topic. You can't really go by the numbers to base off of the "must-have" console. PS2 was already established with PSone and was released well over a year before the Xbox, so of course it will sell more than the Xbox. The "must-have" argument is 100% subjective and that is the only fact in any of this mess.

Uh, guys . . . . hello . . . a $1 hamburger and a $150 - $300 dollar game console have no business being in the same argument, so that McDonald's attempted analogy is pure garbage.
As for knowing what albums are "great" or not . . . that's pure bunk as well, I've heard about waayyyy too many albums being "great" prior to release, and then wasting my money on them. I'm not a hardcore music fan, and I don't own an Ipod or imitation product, but that is really the only logical way to go in terms of collecting great music and saving money in the long run, IMO.
I've been a video game fan since my Atari 2600 . . . I've had many, many different consoles . . . I've written thesis papers on the industry, both in college and law school . . . heck, I've even worked for Sony . . . I've seen this industry in great detail, and trust me, there is no debate amongst those of us with an in-depth appreciation of this industry that the PS2 is absolutely a MUST HAVE video game console for hardcore gamers. Sales, "buzz," games, and imitation do not lie.
And BTW, nice reading job from the guy who made the Brittany Spears argument . . . you might want to review my prior post again.Been gaming since the Atari 2600, and hells no I won't stop!!!Comment

Re: Is it OK to like the PS2?
By "buzz" do you mean hype or just a lot of news in general? Sony has been known to overhype their products to no end.
Imitation? I like how you throw around that word in your posts in this thread. When I think of imitation, I think of a generic, subpar, short term pill and I don't think Sony has an imitation console.
If you're a "hardcore gamer," all 3 consoles are must haves, not just one.

For the music thing, there are plenty of other options for mp3 players and they aren't all 5 gigs or lower. The ipod isn't the only mp3 player for a hardcore music fans. As far as the xbox and ps2, I agree with you.Originally posted by ActLikeYouKnow8If you're a hardcore music fan, you already know which albums are going to be **** and which albums are going to be gold, plus if you're a hardcore music fan, you'll own as many albums as you can possibly purchase in your life. Re: Is it OK to like the PS2?
Yes, I know iPod isn't the only mp3 player for "hardcore music fans," and I addressed the 30+ GB models as being more for hardcore music fans because hardcore music fans invest more time and money into music, and hence, need more space. A person who doesn't invest much time or money into much, a "casual music fan" would probably find a 5gb or less mp3 player more than adequate. I only mentioned iPod because he brought iPod and "an imitation product" up. I don't understand why he includes imitation products in his posts.Originally posted by jmood88For the music thing, there are plenty of other options for mp3 players and they aren't all 5 gigs or lower. Re: Is it OK to like the PS2?
i would say all gamers miss out because of console's and the wars they spark. Xbox owners who never get to experience the Jax and Daxter universe are certainly missing out while PS2 and Xbox gamers who don't have Zelda miss out on a lot also. I know that I am missing out on Knights of the old republic by not having a Xbox. The point is that the games I play on the PS2 I love, and the games i have on the Cube I love. I never could afford the Box so I had to miss out. I think If you took the best game from each system and compared them in terms of depth, graphics and gameplay you would probably be suprised to find out that there is not much difference in the three. And to talk about XBl and how great it is, is by no means a reason to hate Sony. Some gamers, myself included do not care about online gaming. I mean I have a network adapter and a wireless adapter and a router and do you know how often I connect online. Maybe once every 2 months. So for many people, almost 70 to 80 million PS2 owners, online function is not a big deal.I can do all things in Christ who strengthens me!

Re: Is it OK to like the PS2?
Every time I weigh in on this subject, I say the same thing. This time is no different:Originally posted by XBox_RoughneckI'm sorry. I've spent 4 solid years enjoying my XBox and thinking that there was no reason for me to ever own a Playstation 2.
Well. The announcement of the PS3 a few weeks ago got me thinking about where I was going to spend my next generation gaming dollars. I'd been happy with my XBox, but me not being able to play FPSers for extended periods of time (no Halo for me) I started thinking more about the games that would be available next generation and less about the actual hardware.
You see. One of the reasons I picked up the XBox in December of 2000 was because I felt it was better "hardware" than what Sony offered. In many ways it still is.
Built in hard drive (this is a must for next generation consoles)
4 controller ports
Built in ethernet
More memory
Powerful GPU
Better controller (Playstation controllers have ALWAYS been too small IMHO)
Just two weeks ago I traded one of my XBox in for a PS2 just so I could familiarize myself with some of the platform specific titles.
Let me just say that this little black box, when all is said and done, may be my favorite console I've ever owned.
Yes, all the hardware negatives I mentioned above still apply. I HATE not having a hard drive. You can't believe how much I hate it (and the fact that the only hard drive released by Sony won't work with the new, slim PS2s).
That said, I still love this baby. It's got half the muscle of the XBox, yet it has titles that compare very favoreably to some of the XBox best. Let me list the 8 PS2 titles I own.
1) GOD of WAR
2) Virtua Fighter Evolution
3) Madden 2004
4) NCAA 2004
5) Jak & Daxter
6) Gran Turismo 3-A
7) SOCOM II
8) Metal Gear Solid 2
All except for God of War were picked up for less than $20, most for less than $10.
I am having the freakin' console gaming time of my life. I literally feel like a kid again. Every frickin title is a A-grade title. I even thought Madden would suck compared to the XBox version, but the 2004 version of Madden actually has online advantages to it's XBox counterpart. Not to mention the fact that, even though the PS2 does have "jaggies", the brightness and colors on the PS2 stand out more than they do on the XBox. At least in the games I've seen.
I also picked up the wireless Logitech controller which is of a much higher quality than the standard DS2 controller that ships with the PS2.
Yep. This long time XBox fanatic is finding some true gaming joy with his new PS2 toy. IMHO it's the little (I'm talking 1/5th the size of the XBox) black box that could.
Gotta get back to GOW. Very good action title.
I love both consoles.
I was a PS2 guy for a couple of years. I hated on the XBOX. It's a natural tendency for people to pull against the rival of their preferred item of choice. (This is very evident in the sports arena). Add a monetary investment into the mix, and everyone wants to pull even harder. No one wants to admit they spent ~$300 on the lesser product.
That said, once KOTOR was voted GOTY, I broke down and bought an XBOX. I now own both systems (with approximately 30 games for the PS2 and 15 games for the XBOX). I love playing both systems. In fact, I recently bought a PSP and love it, too.
My advice, don't hate on another system. If you can afford it, buy both. If not, simply pick one and enjoy the hell out of it. The great thing is, we have so much to choose from these days. If either console pulled an EA and bought the other system out, I don't know if we'd see the continued advancements in console gaming. Enjoy this guys!Comment
