Try the 2 Shadow Hearts games.

I never played it but Blood Will Tell might be what you're looking for.

Dark Cloud 2 was pretty good.

Gladius was awesome on Xbox. Never finished it,only rented so not sure how long it is.

My favorite on the PS2 is Xenosaga. It's a sci-fi based rpg.

They do a verrry good job of setting up the story and character development is top notch. By games end I guarantee you will care about the characters. It's part 1 of a 6 part series.

My only caution is that some people didn't like it because of the long cut scenes. To me, I enjoyed them and it helped make the world come alive. It served to help the story and character development as I said earlier. It's "shot" with a cinematic quality like no oher in that regard. Total cut scene time is almost 8 hours. Total actual game play time... about 32 - 52 hours for a total of 40 - 60 hours.

The sound track was done by Yasunori Mitsuda from Chrono Cross fame and he had the London Symphony Orchestra perform the pieces.

The whole game oozes with quality and since it's a greatest hits game now, you can pick it up for cheap. (STEAL!)

It's just too bad this game fell under the radar because when it comes to rpg's, all you'll ever hear is FF(insert number).



Shadow Hearts as previously mentioned was another quality game. Good story in that one too. Based in 1900's Europe and deals with demons and that sort.

kingdom hearts is my favorite ps2 game of all time. I also loved baulders gate dark alliance(the first one!!!!) Final fantasy x is aweosme too but i found it really hard.

I'm jealous of any of you guys who were able to finish Shadow Hearts Covenant. The story and characters seem really interesting, but I've reached a point in my life where I can no longer play random encounter battle RPG's for more than five minutes. Thank goodness FF12 is doing away with them, I may actually finish a Final Fantasy game.

one of the best battle systems in an rpg I've played in awhile.
an absolute BLAST to play.

question on Shadow Hearts...the first one doesn't get as good reviews as the Shadow Hearts:Covenant...does it really matter if i actually play the first one, or could i just skip it and play the better one?

The games you mention are GREAT games, but I don't think they are for casual roleplaying fans. They are all really 100 plus hour games. I could be wrong, but I got the idea that the OP didn't really want to invest that kind of hardcore time.

As an aside I just reinstalled B.G. 2 on my computer a couple of weeks ago, you're right,they just don't make them like that any more. Some of these companies that are making bad MMORPGS, should just forget about that and make a good solid offline RPG.

I've been playing BG 2 for a little over a month now. I love that game to death. It now owns my #2 slot for favorite RPG right behind Morrowind. BG 2 has so many diffrent paths to take, allies to play with and the allies in your party are what make the game interesting. I love how they'll just come out at random moments into they're own story and background. Only RPG I've ever played were my party members tried to kill each other because of their beliefs.

The game makes some references to the main character's love interest from the first one and a few other things (avoiding spoilers). The game stands on it's own so that you don't necessarily have to play the first one but it does make some scenes have more impact if you did though.

Well, he said he was looking for gameplay, weapons and combat above all else. The Baldur's Gate Trilogy offers the best of the above. Casual roleplaying fans are usually looking for games with lots of cutscenes and good graphics. If that's what he's looking for, then he should try Xenosaga, FFX, Star Ocean, etc.

I suggested Shadow Hearts because it was similar to other PS2 RPGs, but added a little kick to the gameplay. I played Shadow Hearts Covenant without playing Shadow Hearts and I was fine. Japanese RPGs usually don't make much sense storywise anyway.

Yea, I was exaggerating the cut scenes. They were'nt bad, I remember watching a cutscene with a beer and a cig and finished both before the game continued. It was kinda like playing a movie. But just like any other FF game I've played, I can never quite finish them. After a certain period of time, I get burntout on all the random battles. The FF series is kinda why I searched for an alternative in the RPG world. I could'nt take the random fights.

The thing I can't stand about that series is the turn-based fighting. That just ruins everything.

It combines both BGs and expansions as well as a bunch of mods into one game running under the BG2 engine...so you get the better graphics and whatnot of BG2 with the BG1 story. Also, it adds a bunch of quests, new areas, npcs, items, etc. It's a complicated install process that takes almost an hour and you can screw it up easily.

There are tons of mods for the game...If you haven't tried any, then it's worth reinstalling BG.
