The first thing to note is that a new alternate 'Action' control system has been introduced alongside the traditional one we all know and love/hate. Prompted by producer Jun Takeuchi's affection for first-person shooters, it remaps the aim and fire controls to the left and right triggers. "Obviously the Resident Evil series is really popular in the west, so we wanted to put in a system that western users might find a little easier to control," he tells us.

If you've spent any time with Call of Duty or Gears of War, you'll find it comes naturally, and as a result of being able to do what comes naturally, you don't have to clamber over the usual Resident Evil obstacle of rewiring your brain to adapt. Equally helpful is the decision to map the knife slash and various punches and kicks to the right trigger depending on the context.

But although the fire and aiming basics are retooled, the important thing is it still feels very much like Resident Evil, with the same stop-and-fire combat style that's characterised the series since day one, so diehard fans needn't panic. As ever, the tension comes from the need to conserve ammo, and to do that you need to pull off headshots on demand, aided by a laser pointer.

In terms of Resident Evil 5's puzzle content, Takeuchi reckons, "It's probably about the same amount as Resident Evil 4," but claims it will feel like more of an adventure than last time because of more elaborate level design. "Resident Evil 4 didn't have much in the way of exploration or going off down different paths - it was very simple. Mikami-san himself described the game as a big circuit, basically. So, in Resident Evil 5, the layout of the game will be more complicated, so there will be more of an element of exploration and adventure than 4."

A downloadable demo, however, is definitely on the cards: "We'll be making an announcement about that relatively soon," he says. And what about downloadable content? "That's one of the things we're thinking about right now. We do get that question a lot, and people seem to want it, so it's possible that it's something we would like to respond to.

At least the classic control lay out is still there. I liked the way RE4 controlled.

Demo next week, but so far, it's only for Japan.

Capcom has a big pre-Christmas surprise on the way for Xbox 360 owners: a demo of Resident Evil 5!

Famitsu reports in its latest issue that a demo of the latest and greatest in survival horror will be available on Xbox Live Marketplace starting December 5. Players will be able to sample two stages of play set in that familiar urban setting from past game show demos. These stages will be playable both offline and through co-op.

There are a couple of caveats about the demo. First, only Gold Members will have access to it. Second, as Famitsu is a Japanese magazine, the demo is only confirmed for Japan at the moment. Of course, given how things have worked out in the past with Xbox Live, it's reasonable to expect the demo elsewhere throughout the world around the same time.

For PlayStation 3 owners, we're sorry to report that Famitsu doesn't make any mention of a demo for that version of the game. This is presumably an Xbox 360 exclusive.

Update: Capcom has confirmed to Shacknews that a Resident Evil 5 demo will hit both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in North America, though there is no announced timeframe. The company hopes to pin down a specific demo date "soon."

Here are my impressions:





HOLY ****!!!!!!! THESE GRAPHICS ARE INSANE... THIS IS LIKE RESIDENT EVIL 4 IN SUPER TURBO OVERDRIVE!! OMG ANYONE WHO WAS A FAN OF PART 4 WILL FALL IN LOVE WITH PART 5.. EVERYTHING LOOKS AWESOME, NO FRAME RATE HITCHES ANYWHERE...


The only thing i need to change is th elook sensitivity, they aim too slow and people used to gears of war might have a bit of difficulty adjusting to the "no aim and move"

I played on line with someone random and there was no lag or nothing... this is just.. it's just amazing. Ammo was super scarce so I got destroyed by some kind of axe weilding potato bag headed guy but I did give him a straight punch before going down and it was EFFECTIVE!


Game is just great...

Define what you mean by changed? I logged in this morning on my japanese account but it was silver so it was a no go for downloading.
