I was just surfing around and stuff but I really couldn't believe what I see. Check it out for yourself and drop your thoughts on it. Funny how news just pops up under radar....

Short answer: who cares.

I mean, look at it this way. There's a new generation console coming out for $300 (speculation), the same price that was originally on the PS2. Most gamers have or have had the PS2 this generation, so I don't see this "price cut" hurting Xbox's release. Sony is trying to cling on to this generation as long as possible because, IMO, they feel threatened by the 360.

its not going to hurt xbox's release PERIOD. No one is going to buy a brand new ps2 for 100 bucks once they see footage of the 360 or they play it.

Thought I'd like to believe that, you'd be quite surprised about who is willing to make a dumb decision like that. Kind of that low blow they gave MS when they dropped that price forcing MS to drop their price to compete. But, Sony is milking that mother lover for ALL IT'S WORTH. Don't forget that they might toss in some love for the PSP too.

I worked at Toys'R'Us when the N64 was launched and on that day Sony announced a big price drop for the PS (1) and for my store at least, it outsold Nintendo for the first 2 weeks.

This isn't the exact same situation but it can't hurt Sony.

I don't see it being all that much of a factor based soley on what the article recited with "who is really in the market for a current generation console with the launch of the next generation so near?"

i think it'll have more of an effect than you guys think. first of all most people dont even touch consoles on release as they are overpriced with a slim amount of launch titles to choose from, will be the same on both accounts for consoles this time around.

they arent targeting the hardcore here, as they have already grabbed up a ps2. this is for the casual vg player, and its right around x-mas time. people will be all lover this thing for 100$.

How many systems have had as much success as PS2 AND had a price range as comfortable as $100? My point is that a lot of kats will be pushing to get one and probably detour their thoughts of getting an 360. Some people are dumb enough to do that. It's mad easy to come up with a hundred. College students would be a nice bunch. People trying to move into their houses or something. Little kids finally learning how to use their body parts. All types of people on the real. It's a good plan. I wonder if they're losing anything....

I still see way too many similarities to the DC in MS's strategy. Sega did the same exact thing as MS is doing now and Sony is reacting the same way they did to crush Sega, and dropping the price was a major factor along with dropping multiple major exclusives on the launch.

I dont have a PS2. I went with XBOX ($199) and my son wanted Gamecube ($99). My strategy is to wait as long as possible for prices to come down or wait until the new generation comes out and then get the older generation at a discount. To me it doesnt matter if I have the latest greatest, I figure I could get a PS2 for $99 (saw it at my Meijer at that price) and pick up games at a lower price. If I waited for PS3 or XBX360 it would be $300 for console and then $59.99 a game? Considering my son would want to play a ton of games it makes sense to go with a PS2 and any games that he would want would be cheaper then $60. IMO

There's a huge difference between Sega and MS: Cash reserves.

MS has the cash to burn on the Xbox to commit to long-term market success. Sega didn't.

They have stated that the xbox was the break-in system, the xbox 360 is expected to produce revenue. So they won't be making the same kinds of price-cuts/bundles they have made with xbox 1 unless things get real bad.

exactly...MS is going into this long term...they know they have to spend the money now to gain market share...Gaming isn't MS's top money gainer either, while that was pretty much all Sega had, and gaming is Sony's top revenue stream too (If i remember right). Different situations overall.
