Im sure if Sony drops the price of the PS2, MS can drop the price of the Xbox. Dont really see this as making a difference with the 360 launch

Look at it the other way. If you were a long time PS2'er (like me) and the PS3 was coming out first and you could get your hands on new Xbox for under $100 wouldn't you buy one? I would. There are some damn good games for Xbox that are exclusive that I would enjoy playing if i could not afford a next gen console and had my PS2 since original launch. Not everyone has 300-500 to drop on a new system +accessories and games right at launch or even until the first (or sometimes second) price drop.
I think its a smart and logical move. Why not move more systems before Xbox360's release and even move more units before the PS3 release.Comment

Those systems are due for a price drop anyway. The regular xbox will be reduced as well if this happens. It will not effect the people who really want to have next generation systems.Comment

Knowing that I'm waiting until spring 2006, why would I want to pay $100 for a PS2 for four or five months when that $100 could be applied to my Xbox 360 purchase in the spring?
I guess I'm not the impulsive consumer that Sony may be targeting with this price cut. The PS2 could be $50, and I'm not buying one with the Xbox 360 and PS3 right around the corner.
Take care,

It's a good decision and it might get them a few hundred or so people that were going to get 360, get PS2 instead. However it's not going to cut down 360 sales in half or anything like that.Comment

This price drop might get some video game stragglers in the door, but anyone with a system currently would most likely want the new, shiny thing.Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

As for the a low priced PS2, that won't hurt the 360 at all. A cheap PS2 price will sell a lot, but mainly to casual gamers and gamers looking for cheaper bargains. The 360, or any console launch targets hardcore gamers, and early adopters. Most of them already own, or have owned a PS2.Comment

Another interesting topic where Sony is weighing their options. Ironically, I'm really curious to see if Microsoft still keeps their same launch date. If they could wait a couple of months and possibly put the HD-DVD in as standard, I'd definitely be more than satisfied. I can only hope. In the mean time, check out the article hereComment

Re: Sony's counter to XBOX 360 launch....interesting...
I think that Sony is holding out on the PS3 to possibly make it cheaper in the long run and have more to sell. That article was kind of interesting. They also can have much more games at the time of release as compared to Spring of next year which would be a dead season. Maybe all this holding it is a slight strategy for the consumer or something. Quite interesting.
By the way, MS can't sell XBOX at a lower price than they already are selling them because they are losing money. That hard drive that they have included in their system does kill a lot of their profit for the system at first. They make their money from games. Since MS didn't focus on time consuming hobbies like shrinking their system to get more profit and power out of it, they can't really decrease their prices for XBOX. Personally, I'm sure they'll be sticking to their word and stay with XBOX for a couple more years, but they're refocusing their money making towards the 360.
One thing that I did realize is that Sony can make their system cheaper because they don't have a hard drive in it to keep it at a set price. The hard drive would have made Sony rock in the same boat as MS. Maybe that's why they aren't giving into the hype of "needing" a hard drive. They are probably thinking in the future where when they make those price cuts, they have more room to chop. All thoughts. There are a lot of people that do like the look of the "new" PS2. It's just like a fad too. Kats trade in their old ones for new ones and stuff like that. Those who couldn't afford it before are seeing it more appealing to them. Especially with the type of library that it has. Good DVD purposes also. Shoot, it's almost a great steal....Comment

I plan on getting a 360 at launch, and my PS2 has been broken for almost a year. So this is good I guess. I can pick up another PS2 around the time of 360, get some games that I've missed out on with that system and still play the next GEN console as well.“Nobody in the history of the game tried what I just tried. I just noticed in the PS3 article that XBOX is going down to $99 as well.So it might help momentarily but I don't see how this is going to help defend against 360 launching and holding off the 360 for 2 years. (assuming PS3 doesnt release until '07)
