I think this is a bit of a mistake.
They won't sell too many, to be sure.

Developers likely won't be able to use it for games, because not every system will have it standard.

This was part of my beef with the "Core" and "Premium" systems to beging with.

Console systems succeed because of standard hardware - no muss, no fuss for consumers. Any add-ons like this (see the PS2 hard drive or Sega CD - I could go on) never gain widespread acceptance because by nature, they can never be fully utilized, and I don't think this HD-DVD drive will be any different.

i can't see the dvd player being more then 200 bucks cuz it would be idiotic they should just give people wit them already free hd dvd drive's and the new 360 come wit hd dvds hey they would lose money but in the long run it's worth it

If Toshiba's HD-DVD players starts out at $500 and Sony's Blu-Ray players start out at $1,000 like another poster posted earlier in this thread, I see more consumers buying the HD-DVD player over the Blu-Ray.

If im not mistaken, I think the only bluray player is the pioneer one that cost $1800....

Another bonehead move from MS. I bought the system b/c it was the first on the block. I don't regret it, but things like this really piss me off.

no interest in this unless they have plans to have games on HD-DVD's at the same price as regular games.. if not.. i'll stick to dvd-9 movies lol

You are mistaken, actually. Samsung is releasing a Blu-ray player, which will actually be the first one on the market, for a grand.

Another thing to consider about the 360's external HD-DVD drive is the fact that due to the studios' paranoia about piracy, at this point they are limiting output of HD resolutions to only the HDMI port. That means that the 360's HD component cables will NOT carry the HD signal of those discs. Now, it isn't 100% set in stone that this will always be the case, as they still haven't completely ruled out being able to use component cables for it, but this first wave of players will only output HD through HDMI. Thus, if it holds, the external drive will likely have an HDMI output on the back of it, and maybe just let you connect to the 360 with USB just to power it.

It's impossible to convert normal movies to HD.

Actualy im going to have to correct you here. You can play DVDs in 720P and 1080i and there are DVD Players that do this albeit expensive there are also less expensive ways like HTPCs, heck my Xbox 1 does this now with Xbox Media Center. Lots of Videophiles upconvert their DVDs to 720p and 1080i.

HBO and Cinemax do it all the time! They upconvert certain DVDs that are remastered in HD to 1080i.

There are also certain codecs that will actually output in 720P and 1080i that
will fit on a DVD5 or DVD-9.

let me clarify.

you cannot take a DVD like say, wedding crashers since it came out this week, and watch it in HD. Thats the whole point of HD and Blu Ray. Those formats can hold much more data, which is required to view a movie in HD. there is no way you can take a DVD, and watch it in true HD. it may upconvert to 720 or 1080, but thats not true HD.

but you can fill it up to a hd tv, i've seen the universal hd channel have movies from back b4 hdtv were even out and they did look better then the normal quality im not saying is gonna look like the nfl on hd or anything but it will look better cause i've seen it on the movie channels in hd

i have seen those movies as well, and there is a clear difference between an HD movie, and a movie that was up converted. mainly the old movies on the hd channels dont look much better, they are jsut shown in natural widescreen.
