Umm....EA bought that license too....and the AFL

I'll never agree to the idea that the NFL is the main one to blame here. They didn't make EA snap up the NCAA football and AFL licenses (also ironic that EA only got NCAA football and baseball exclusivity? Why not basketball as well (thank goodness they couldn't/didn't))

My exact thinking. I cant understand why ppl think the NFL just flat out offered the license up for bid when there are 2 other completely diffrent leagues that EA picked up as well...at the same time. Right.

I am still mad at the NCAA for that. Seems pretty shady. The whole amateur athlete thing, and them not getting paid. Yet, the NCAA can sell the rights to the logos and make a ton of money for Miles Brand and co.

Hmm...I wouldn't put a whole lot of stock into that poll considering alot of people may not even have seen it to vote in it. I visit IGN nearly everyday and I never saw it as I guess I visit the front page always and not always the sports page. With that being said I honestly don't know who i'd vote for. I lean toward the 2K series except in football but that's a pretty big exception.

Anyways, all the poll really shows is that hardcore gamers prefer 2K series, which I think most of us knew anyways. If general gamers preferred the 2k series then it'd be beating EA in sales, which it's not even close to doing. If you want a real poll that would gauge the buying public then it'd make more sense for a general news site like CNN.com or USAToday.com to do the poll.

Look at Live and NBA 2K6. NFL 2K would of absolutely beat Madden for the next gen if it was still around. EA knew that so they did what was necessary.
              Great statement..... I concur...

I read most of the comments by the poll voters.... most stressed the impact of having no choice... and how the consumer is served best when companies compete....

PS.... Also if 2K would increase it's AD budget.... the casual gamer wouldn't just by EA.... even the casual gamer wants the best game....

I think this is due to the fact that 2K can't (and doesn't) get their name like EA can and does. That, and that it seems that EA attracts all 'generations'... you'll never hear a kid talking about NFL 2K something, but you'll hear them Maddenize you. Mommies don't even know how to say 2K without thinking high-tech gear, but they know the Madden name well just in general.

Plus, I'm sure that people have posted their gripes about this before, but clerks and cashiers brainwash customers to get the EA titles for some odd reason or another. Who knows? Maybe they're paid to.

Just my input on this subject, although I agree with you.

Yeah I know what you're saying but one thing I will say is all the Best Buys, EB Games and Gamestops I've gone to are the opposite, they really dog on EA and promote 2k as being the better series. But i'm sure in regular retail like KB Toys and whatnot that may not be the case at all.

As I've stated before, the only way anyone is ever going to get the kind of name brand recognition enjoyed by EA Sports is for a brand like 2K to not only succeed and have great games but to do it consistently for years while always utilizing the same packaging such as name of the series, etc. It's like any other industry where people tend to trust a long-lived brand, rightfully or not.

I also find this to be true.... unlike cars... you can't test drive a new game... when asked the clerks I've talked to will push the game they think is best... for the past year 2k has been pop. when customers ask.... I've gone to 4 different gaming stores for the past yr 1/2..... of course this by no means is scientific...

EA's name rides many sports titles.... so its AD budget goes yr round.... 2K need only increase its amount and duration of ADs and time......

For the young kids that wanna play football, EA makes NFL Street. Tell all the toddlers to pick that game up if they want some pigskin action. I dont wanna see a real NFL fan have Street and Madden in the same house. One should be the sim for the hardcore and the other should be for the "kids".

And dont start with franchise and owners mode. Madden was'nt the first game to ever have a franchise mode and Owners mode was a cheap gimmick based off their text sims. But first and foremost, they dont cater to the hardcore where it counts, and thats on the field gameplay. If you think truck stick and hit stick was for the hardcore, more power to you.
On the other side of the coin Madden has the largest hardcore audience bar none. Kind of like how Street Fighter 2 was back in the arcades. The amount of tournaments and events held is second to none. In order to get competitive at the game 60 plus hours is a requirement.

Exactly, EA has cemented itself as top dog for producing quality titles since the 16 bit era. If it was'nt for those times, EA would'nt be in the position its in. They only started falling off when 2K games were deemed better in terms of graphical presentation. I'm not gonna say gameplay because many ppl like one or the other. EA has always used to same business practices even back in the day. 3-4 year plan while stretching out the feature list to cover that time period. Diffrence between now and then, is they did'nt have anyone who could match them back then.

At the same time, I would'nt exactly refer to those hardcore Madden players as hardcore NFL fans. Ever since the Madden tournament came into exsistence, I knew that Madden was primarily a head to head game. The reason why the skimp on the graphical and presentation side is because whats most important to them the multiplayer and that is the market they are tryna cater to. Single player fans get some things to but the AI has always been the worst thing about EA sports games. The skimp on that as well.
