Why is it outrageous? At $500 bucks that's the price of a high end nVidia card. A PS3 with a Blu-Ray drive, Hard Drive included is a steal at that price. To put it another way it's only $101 more than a 360 preimium.

      just a thought

I wil purchase a PS3 when the price drops to $299.00. $500.00 is crazy. The price of these new systems will drop by 2nd quarter 07.

For nothing different.... Blu Ray means NOTHING at this point.

$499 is not a bad price for the ps3. You get the blue ray and HDD included. Im not into having my gaming system used for watching movies but for other people that dont care this is not that bad a price.

Would I buy it at $500, no. Do I think there is a HDD built in, no. If the system comes out at $399, even w/o a HDD, I would probably buy it.

Exactly it's a helleva deal at that price, if it includes the HDD and BR drive.

Okay so maybe I missed something.

Are blue-rays going to completely replace DVDs(sort of like DVds did with tapes) within the next year? If they're not...f that.

Well from what I gleamed from the Blu-Ray thread in the entertainment forum it's not going to replace regular DVDs for a while now. it probably won't be dominant for another 5 years. Hell, it could only be a video game medium rather then for movies and such.

So...what's the hype surrounding the PS3 being compatible with these?

I don't see this as any reason for justifying spending 500 dollars on a system, when I have a 360.

-"Oh well it's got a blue ray system!"
                        -"What the hell is that?"
-"I don't really know, and i will probably never use it...but come on, it sounds cool."

If it is dominant at all. The difference between Bluray/ HD-DVD and DVD is that in order to get the full effect of a DVD all u need is a DVD player and a TV. For Bluray you need a HDTV and only 20% (maybe less) of the country has one. I dont see Bluray replacing DVDs anytime soon.

You know this is all mere spectulation at best. I take what CNN/Money said with a grain of salt. If i'm not mistaken these so called analyst were predicting that the PSP would cost around $400 maybe more. And others thought the 360 was going to retail for more than $400.

It's all a guess and Sony has probably settled on a price and it will probably be close to what the 360 is selling for. Chill people until Sony makes the announcement it's all a guess.

The thing with the PSP is that we all knew that was BS. No way a handheld will come to the market at $400. It would fail miserably. On the other hand, for a new gaming console.......

it's not out of the realm of possibility.

If it's $400.00, than it won't be so bad. If it's more than $500, I would feel like banging my head against the wall. I do want a PS3 also.
