600,000 Xbox 360 game units sold in US

Microsoft Corp. has sold 600,000 of its new Xbox 360 video game consoles in the United States since its November launch, an analyst for market researcher NPD Group said on Friday.

The Xbox 360 debuted to much fanfare on November 22 in North America, where the unit has been in short supply. Analysts, video game publishers and retailers have said shipments during the key holiday season fell short of expectations.

Microsoft last week confirmed its target of selling between 4.5 million and 5.5 million Xbox 360 consoles during the current business year, which ends June 30, 2006.

A spokeswoman for Microsoft was not immediately able to comment.

Sony Corp., the world's biggest video game console maker, and Nintendo Co. Ltd are preparing to ship their next-generation machines in 2006.

The NPD Group measures nearly two-thirds of retail sales in the United States and makes projections for the remainder of the year.

        Microsoft "messed it up"

They apparently didnt do enough homework.

Thing is, they can get it for a discount.

They might as well not of launched if this is real. 600,000 is an abomination.

so 4 million MORE units in 6 months.. I hope there right.. I have yet to see some on the shelves without a wait. Its really quite pathetic. If I cant get one by march, they have officially lost my business forever. Same goes for the ps3 launch. If I cant just walk into a place a few months down the line and get it, im done with videogames

its funny. its like microsoft thinkings they can play hostage to our money, as if we are holding out on buying a new entertainment center, or adding rims to our car, and when the systems finally drop in stores, that we'll drop everything to pick it up. Life goes on, and for many, it'll be the ps3 release.

And how many of those 600,000 are defective?

I'm excited about the 360 and will get one later this year, but I can't remember a console launch with more reported defects than this one. Seems like even the PS2 didn't have this many dodgy units at launch.

MS is slowing screwing the pooch on this, for these reasons:

                  1. Not enough units available in U.S. for launch, either by design to create hype or due to poor planning and manufacturing capability.

                  2. Seemingly high number of defective units.

                  3. Too many units shipped to Japan, where 360s sit on the shelves while American gamers clamor for them while gazing at empty shelves.

                  4. Where are the games? There was a pretty strong launch lineup, yet it seems like nothing has been released for the system since. I remember J Allard saying last summer that there would be a strong launch followed by a steady stream of releases. Where are they? Potential big sellers like College Hoops 2K6 and Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter already have been delayed.

Selling 600,000 units is decent for MS. But it could have been oh, so much better.

                  Take care,
                  PK

Well, they said about 2%, so we are looking at about 12,000 units in the repair center.

They do, but way too many were sent over there. I think they received 200,000 in reports that I had read and they only sold under 100,000. That's another 100,000 that could have been shared here in the U.S.

I wonder how Microsoft plans to sell 4 million more before July? They better start getting quite a few shipments out to the masses or I think they may only sell about 3 million.

Word. I was hoping to pick up a 360 by now but I just picked up college hoops for my PS2 and will be getting NCAA baseball so I think I'm all set on video game spending for a couple months since I just don't have THAT much free time on my hands. Maybe if I run into an unbundled premium in some random store I'll pick it up but I'm tired of looking around for one and really don't feel like dropping the money on it anymore. Maybe I'll get some more news about the Revolution soon and decide to go with the funky controllered console next-gen or if I get an actual PS3 price I might bite there (I'm not going to pay $500 for a console, sorry Sony, I guess you'll have live with the millions of other people who will pay that much). I was pretty gung-ho about picking up a 360 when the hype machine was in full force before Christmas, and I'm sure I would still be happy with one, but the closer we get to the PS3 and the Revolution, the more I feel like I should weigh my options and go with the one that I know I'll like the best. Here's to you 360 shortage!
