BTW you are still not considering the consequences of Blue-Ray being a mass failure. Introducing a new format is risky and there is a 50/50 shot as to how the format will do. If Blue-Ray tanks....sony is going to tank with it.
How do you think MS will counteract the release of the PS3?

Originally posted by SpongedaddyI believe you are the one that is mistaken. Sony is losing money in all areas of their business. The 360 has not only sold out (true this was due to a shortage) but there is a high demand for the product. When the Ps2 came out it was a gming machine and DVD player at a somewhat good price. Your average consumer will not jump on board a Blue Ray Trojan horse for $700+ dollars. You are thinking short-term and I am thinking long-term. I would place pretty good odds and MS being the industry leader by the time the next-next-gen rolls around.

Re: How do you think MS will counteract the release of the PS3?
Originally posted by MisfitYou're making the assumption that the PS3 will cost 700+ I dont think that will happen. The PS3 is not chained at the hip to Blue-Ray's success as a movie format. If the system sells well they will do fine with Blue-Ray being strictly a game medium. Sony has not done very well with their other electronics but they still have more than enough capital to compete. If they butcher the PS3 launch then they will be in a lot of trouble, but I don't think they will.DON'T PANICComment

Originally posted by RodsterBogus numbers, how many of those 73 million were due to people having to buy a PS2 because the dam thing quit working. Sony's 100 million+ PS2 numbers are inflated. I've been thru 5 broken PS2's.
Yes MS got outsold by a wide margin but Xboxes held up a hell of a lot better than PS2's plus add to the fact Sony had a head start, had the software, had the exclusives, had the developers and yes MS wasn't going to win.
Keep this in mind Xbox Live was borne last gen, it put the Xbox on the map. MS spent cash advertising on ESPN/Xtreme Sports, and MTV and we now have a culture as what's known as the "Xbox Generation" sorry if you haven't heard of them it's kind of a trendy thing.
Microsoft came into the game with NO console experience and YES they spent money lots of it. They finished second to Sony. Not too shabby seeing Nintendo has been doing this a lot longer.
Microsoft is now in the drivers seat this time and if they play their cards right they will chisle away at Sony even more. I still expect Sony to win overall but not like the last time. And it maybe a different story in the US, MS just might take it this time.
Now for the PS3, it has too live up to or exceed the Xbox 360 because we know what it can do and for some the expectations are huge seeing how Sony is hyping this thing again. If games don't look much better than what's being offered by the 360 they will have a tougher go at it this time around. Sony doesn't have as many exclusives as the last time either. Most games will be offered on both systems.
if I buy Madden 07 on the 360 and the PS3 version doesn't look all that much better and the PS3 costs alot more than the 360 then it becomes a no brainer for some. You go with the least expensive system, the 360.
Yes IMO I still stand by what I said earlier Microsoft's gameplan is working and Sony knows it as well.
My thing is, what is "next, next generation"? Where you can see the crust on someone's eyes when they wake up? This new generation is "it" for a long while. And even then they will sell much slower than the current generation, due to costs and oversaturation of current gen software. Again, the bubble for the game industry has already popped. MS was too late and it will take some fat mistakes by sony to let up the lead.Comment

In other words, you can walk into pretty much any joint these days and find games cheaper then publishers would want you to. So I think there is a high probability it will take much, much longer for the "lead" console to duplicate the PS2's pace. Plus these systems are more complicated then ever to develop for, so it's going to take that much longer for the software to mature. The longer that takes the longer it takes to get big sales numbers. Digital distribution can aleviate this, that's only if they can get more than 10% of a big userbase online.
So if MS can't catch up wtih Sony there aren't many "next times".Comment

Originally posted by Erv. Tell me what the purpose of making a system after 360/PS3 is. The graphics are fast approaching a ceiling, and improving the hardware won't translate to better experiences. Nintendo, who has the most prolific gaming history of anyone out there, sees the same thing. The focus on cramming ever little graphical detail possible can negatively effect projects. Would you rather have someone tuning AI or drawing leaf hairs?

Game companies need to make their money back because of higher costs and so we're not seeing as many exclusives for either machine as in the past. Now the actual company as in MS and Sony are the ones bringing out their own exclusives rather than seeing GTA only on PS2. Those days are no more.
MS has been catching up to Sony since the first Xbox. Again they entered into the business with no marketshare and now they are number two. There aren't many who feel Sony won't lose more infact they feel the opposite will happen. You might want to listen to 1up's recent podcast where they speak of this very thing.
They mentioned how MS is taking it to Sony and MS is not backing down and the 360 has more marketshare to gain from Sony. As I said earlier and all the articles i've read point to Sony losing more marketshare as a result of Microsoft.
MS may or may not be top dog when the next round of consoles come out in a few years but i'm willing to bet it will be a helleva lot closer than it was when they first met with the PS2 vs Xbox.
And it won't end till MS is on top.Last edited by Rodster; 03-18-2006, 08:49 AM.Comment
