So when any of you have had an XBox 360 die...

    Guys,

I think my XBox 360 might've just died. I was playing some co-op Ghost Recon online, and it locked up on me. I turned the unit off. Waited 10 seconds. Turned it back on, and got nothing but a blank screen.

I turned it off, waited another 10 seconds, and powered it up by hitting the eject botton (so I could go straight to the dashboard). This time, I got the red ring on the console.

I turned it off again, waited for about 2 minutes, and powered it back on. This time, it started to boot up normally but locked up on the initial XBox 360 screen.

That was about 5 minutes ago. I'm going to let it cool down for a while (I have had it on for about 6 hours straight, lol).

For any of you who had an XBox die, is mine dead? Does it just need to cool down?

Alright guys, it appears it's okay for now. I was just now able to power it back up with no problem. That's what I get for playing the thing non-stop for so long.

Either way, I'm calling Microsoft and telling them I need a replacement unit. Don't want to take any chances.

Sounds like it bro, best thing to do is call MS. I've never had one die, yet (knock on wood). But that sounds about right from stories I've read.

Advantages of having a dead Xbox 360, the new drives are quieter supposedly.

Disadvantages, no Oblivion, Ghost Recon, MLB2k6 for 4-8 days probably.

      Good luck!

6 hours isn't too bad, definately shouldn't have back to back lock ups like that. One every once in awhile maybe. But good call, I'm sure if you explain to MS what happened before, they'll replace it.

I think it was just confused because you had a game other than Oblivion in it. I'd try booting it up with Oblivion, while listening for an audible sigh of relief from the console.

once you see the red, you will see it again. trust me. it may not happen tomorrow, but soon. muahahahaha.

seriously though, just be prepared to send it into microsoft. it's been well documented here that i'm on my third console. fortunately the third has been a charm thus far.

              Yup it's dead.
Mine worked again after the intial crash but after that it didn't. Took almost 3 weeks to get a replacement.

Smart call and sorry to hear that about your system man. See if you can snag an Intercooler 360 by Nyko. It helps with systems overheating.

You may also want to check and make sure both fans in the rear are working. If not it WILL cause overheating problems. This is where the Intercooler helps if you lose a rear Xbox 360 fan.

Send it in TJ. Mine did the same thing about 2 months ago, I had a game freeze then I restarted it and worked for a couple more days. Then after that I could never get it to come back on, blank screen with the 3 red lights.

NOW about a week ago or so, the "new" 360 they sent me randomly freezes during every game. So now I'll be on my 3rd one and hopefully don't have anymore damn problems. Although this time, they sent me a free copy of PGR 3.

i think the excess plugs in my surgeprotector caused me to get the 3 red lights once... this happened MAD months ago, and haven't had any of the red light issues since... but TJ, u should send yours back.

Yup. A launch 360 with a born-on date of 11/10/2005. I tried to play it a couple of more times last night. It would work for maybe 10-15 minutes, then freeze up again.

This is why I have not been online for the last 10 days or more. I never got the red rings, but the thing is acting ambiguous now. Sometimes it will power on go to the menu. Sometimes it will power on and Freeze within 2 seconds. Sometimes nothing but a black screen. Called up MS and they are getting on it.

Just an update on my situation...

I went out today and bought the Intercooler, just incase that had anything to do with it. I came home, hooked it up, and played Oblivion for about an hour before it locked up on me again.

I decided then to call Microsoft. The lady I spoke with asked me how many of the quadrants were lit red back when I got the red ring. I could not remember. She suggested that I try to play the game without the HD hooked up, saying it was possibly a corrupt file that was causing the crashes.

So...I copied my Oblivion save to my memory card, took the HD out, and proceeded to play, uninterupted, for the next 2 and a half hours. I called Microsoft and told them that the trick worked.

They then suggested that I copy any important game saves to a memory card, format the HD, then recopy those files. I followed those instructions and haven't had a lockup yet. That was around noon today, and I've been playing quite a bit.

Hopefully, this was the cause of the crash. We shall see...
