    The Darkness (360 and PS3)

    New screens.

    Some info

Developer is Starbreeze the ones behind Riddick for the Xbox.

On the eve of his 21st birthday, fearless mafia hitman Jackie Estacado is suddenly possessed by the terrifying and spectacular powers of The Darkness. Though his supernatural entity lets him wreak terrible havoc on his enemies, the Darkness also has a strong will of its own and now Jackie must learn how to control it. Gameplay features include a seamless and unique blend of modern crime drama and supernatural horror with both first and third person non-linear progression, ad well as highly destructible environments that enable players to stalk the gritty New York slums, harbors, subway tunnels and rooftops, then defeat the terrifying creatures of The Otherworld-a parallel reality where the Darkness dwells.

"The game isn't only about shooting things, so we're keeping the weapons few but fairly refined. We wanted to encourage the use of Darkness powers". Darkness powers can be used only in the dark, but Jackie will often be able to manipulate the game's lighting by breaking bulbs and turning off switches.

When in Darkness mode, you'll see the demon heads on the bottom right and left sides of the screen. The demon heads have powers, but they also have a personality. They looks around on their own when at rest, and they might occasionally pick a little fight with each other. But don't be fooled by the playfulness: "These are basically the primal kill beasts," Matthies says.

Andersson tells us, "We don't want the Darkness powers to compete with the weapons - guns are pretty efficient tools of destruction already - so we really want to complement the guns."

One of the powers is called creeping dark. Creeping dark is primarily a scouting power - Jackie sends out a tentacle that can snake into places he can't go. Johansson shows it off by using it to sneak through a vent above a door in the alleyway and look around inside.

Another power is the demon arm, which is a long appendage that Jackie can use to grab, lash out, and even impale. The team's intention is for it to be a very destructive power, which Johansson demonstrates by reaching out and driving it straight through the alley guy's heart. He screams and falls to the ground in a puddle of gore. (" Blood is prettier in the next generation," Andersson smiles.)

If the storyline lives up to the Comic, this game will be sick...

E3 06: The Darkness Gameplay Demo Impressions

The team that brought you the surprisingly great Chronicles of Riddick is showing its gritty comic book-themed supernatural shooter behind closed doors at E3. Sure enough, it's looking great.

I'm definitely looking forward to this. This looks a lot more interesting than all of the WWII & Sci-fi FPS games flooding the genre.

This game looks like it has promise. The music is cool and the game just looks freaky. The cops just kinda stood their, but I hope its an early build and that part of the AI hasnt been finished.

Somebody on Xboxyde spoke to a developer working on The Darkness on a Swedish 360 forum.

He said the build is over a year old and it was what was being shown behind closed doors at E3. This video was never intended for the public. As you can see the Confidential-Not For Public Display on the screen. There was no AI, it was all scripted.

                      The Darkness Hands-on
Guns, guts, tentacles and the mafia? Sign us up.

Several years on, Starbreeze Studios, developer of Riddick, has emerged from cryosleep nursing a new licence - Top Cow comic series The Darkness. And based on our hands-on with the first couple of levels of the game, we're feeling the same jittery excitement we felt with Riddick. Clearly building on technology and design choices made in Riddick, the game is again played in first-person, with an emphasis on creative slaughter over straight-up gunplay. Of course, like Riddick, there is no reason why you can't gun your way through each area of the game, filling grunts with lead and strafing to victory. But the kicker is that you'll likely come off second-best in a head-on confrontation, and making use of creative solutions and stealth is the key to gameplay satisfaction.

How does all of this come together? Through the eyes of The Darkness' crooked protagonist, Jackie Estacado - a mafia hit-man working for the Franchetti family. The unfolding tale, which has been penned by the comic series' writer, Paul Jenkins, has all the New Yorkese organised crime posturing of The Sopranos, with a heady mix of excellent dialogue and violence.

Worth reading. Really looking forward to this game.

I was going to make a thread about this, I really can't wait for this game it looks like it's gonna be great. I never played Riddick but based on what I've heard these guys are pretty good.

Very nice, very nice. Between Prey and The Darkness, 2K is establishing itself as the publisher for pretty interesting FPS games.

Also sweet is how the PS3 version has roughly 15 feature films, 10 cartoons, and 20 music videos. That's insane.
