PS3 Launch to look much like 360

No, not the shortage of consoles, but the shortage of games.

GamesRadar+ takes you closer to the games, movies and TV you love.

Sony: Key PS3 launch titles hit in 2007

Friday 19-May-2006 3:37 PM Exclusive: Sony's David Reeves admits key PS3 launch titles like Heavenly Sword will now appear in 2007

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe CEO David Reeves has revealed several key PS3 launch titles including Heavenly Sword, Formula One and Motostorm, will miss the November 17 launch day on PS3 and now appear in 2007.

However, Reeves also revealed that the company plans to cast a wide net during the initial PS3 launch window, saying that "for the first time we are not going to go just for hardcore gamers".

Speaking exclusively to CVG at E3, Reeves explained that Sony is "going to have a portfolio of social gaming" for the launch window, Singstar and EyeToy an integral part of this battleplan. It's not clear whether Singstar on PS3 will be out on launch day, but it'll hit "certainly before Christmas", said Reeves, with "an EyeToy one [game] after Christmas". He added: "EyeToy is not playable at the moment, but it will come before March 2007."<object classid="clsid<img src=" http://forums.operationsports.com/vbulletin/images/smilies/biggrin.gif="" alt="" title="Big Grin" smilieid="3" class="inlineimg" border="0">

</object>Precisely which PS3 titles will actually be available on launch day remains a mystery however, although Reeves told us that Insomniac's Resistance: Fall of Man "will certainly be a launch title". Worryingly, he said that Heavenly Sword, one of the PS3 titles at E3 that actually impressed people, won't hit until "after Christmas", as will the new Formula One game plus off-road racer Motorstorm.

Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kazuo Hirai has assured gamers that Sony expects as many as 15 games to launch with the PS3. So, er, going by the social gaming aspect, that's Resistance: Fall of Man and 14 versions of head-to-head Carol Vorderman's Sudoku then.

Anyway. Despite Sony's pledge to reach a broad audience with PS3 during its launch window, Reeves admitted that appealing direct to the hardcore games playing fraternity will quickly become vital for the company in the next-gen console war.

"Without being too arrogant about it, I don't think we worry too much about building up the hype in the first six months, but where the rubber hits the road is going to be when all those hardcore gamers have bought PS3", said Reeves. "They have also bought Xbox 360 and they have probably bought Nintendo Wii as well."

However, Reeves maintained that shifting PS3s in the early days won't be a problem, such is the strength of the PlayStation brand: "We have built up a certain brand equity over time since the launch of PlayStation in 1995 and PS2 in 2000 that the first five million are going to buy it, whatever it is, even it didn't have games."

We'll be running our full interview with David Reeves next week. Keep 'em peeled for the full PS3 monty.
So what games WILL be available at launch? I know I'll have NBA 2K7 and Warhawk. Are they going to port Fight Night over and have it available at launch?

    Say what?

Blind loyality? 5 million units sold without a game? Sony is never short of arrogance, now or in the past.

The question should be how many hardcore gamers would buy an PS3 for $700 without a launch game till March 2007. I know that's not going to happen, but what if.?

Also, love his statement that hardcore gamers will purchase all 3 next gen systems. Why buy all 3 when you can get 2 for the price of 1?

    Wow.

Fight Night wouldn't be worth porting over, IMO. EA should wait to launch Fight Night Round 4 on all systems simultaneously.

But a shortage of games for the 360 launch? Huh? There was enough games to go around last November, to the point that some games were out a week or two earlier than the system. Bah to that statement.

A shortage of games, IMO is a 4-6 game launch lineup. 8 and up is the magic range, considering demand will rip apart the supply anyhow, and most people won't have enough cash to buy but so many games with a "clear black" PS3.

A while back (2-3 months) I remember some report saying that EA is releasing Fight Night for the PS3 but it would basically be FN 3.5 (or 4) saying that it would be noticeably different enough from the 360 version to call it a different game.

ICT, how is it comparable to the 360 Launch? @ Launch the 360 had 18 titles on the Market. It doesn't look like Sony's gonna have 1/2 of that, unless I'm wrong.....

This was to be expected, just wait until people's $650 dollar machine starts to overheat. What a fun launch its gonna be!

The 360 launched without a killer app, and it looks like the PS3 will too. I believe ICT was referring to a shortage of quality titles, not a shortage of games to the point that there won't be enough to go around. As for how one can sell a system without an A+ title, just look at the PS2's launch.

Resistance will be the "killer app" at least thats the best one Ive heard confirmed at launch. To my understanding, SEVERAL other games will be available within 3-4 months after launch that would be great games.
