Here's an article from last year:

    http://www.neoseeker.com/news/story/5163/

Sony doesn't even have a reason to do it. They don't even lose money when people sell/rent games. They make more. It would kill their profits, and it'll kill retailers' profits if they did this.

They don't make money on used games but for each new game sold, the console maker makes his cut in royalties paid by third party developpers to have their product on the system.

How can Sony make more money when they get royalties only on new sales? If a game passes through 4 people's hands, Sony only gets its royalties for the original sale of the new game. Furthermore, some people wait tofind the games used, which eliminates new sales. I don't like their idea, but to suggest the used games market is not beneficial to either Sony or the developpers.

On another note, can you imagine someone who has the system and has built a nice library of games and has his console die and have to be replaced. Would they need to buy their games again or would Sony Customer Support have some way of unlocking the games for the user's new console? Even if it were the latter, it would mean a major hassle for the customer. Sony would most likely require proof that the old system is dead, proof that the titles were locked to that particulalr system, etc.

Wasn't too big on the idea of getting a PS3, and even more so now.

Same here. If anything, the Wii sounds more interesting with its low price point and the fact that it's something different. Still, I'll most likely just stick with my 360, with the occasional foray into PC gaming. If I ever change jobs and have to commute (I work 5 minutes away from my home) then I might pick up a hand-held but the 360 serves me just fine right now and should last me this whole generation. I just don't get Sony's decisions regarding the PS3.

This is suicide if they actually go through with this. Stupid stupid idea.

This will be a disaster for Sony if this is true
A senior games publishing source told us, "Sony and the rest of us would love to put an end to this damaging trade, but actually making it happen looks like a fight that's beyond even Sony. I can't see it happening, but i hope I'm wrong."

Another senior manager at a third party publisher said, "I know that Sony is very upset about the used games market. But this story seems a bit far-fetched."
This sounds like nothing more than a rumor. Sony simply isn't that stupid.

Again, there's no way this could turn out to be true.
If I own it how can they tell anybody what to do. I guess with an EB or Gamestop they could refuse to send them new product. I bet this will
be challenged in some court down the road, plus it will open up a major Black Market. Who the hell will pay $60.00 or more for a game and be stuck with it
without the chance of trade in value. This practice will turn people off.

well, I would expect that if it were hard-locked, the prices of the games would come down considerably. Since you cant buy it used, those that truly want the game would end up buying it instead of waiting for a used copy, thus more sales ala more royalties. Since more royalties, more likely games drop to say $40 or so.

Ridiculous. There's no way in hell they're going to do this. If they are, they might as well not even release the PS3 and start burning their corporate buildings and selling them for firewood...

[UPDATE] While US Sony reps think the best way to deal with gossip is silence, Sony Europe spokespersons have apparently decided to put this particular rumor to rest. According to the London Guardian's
tech blog, SCEE PR manger Jennie Kong blasted the rumor as " false speculation." "PlayStation 3 software will not be copy protected to a single machine but will be playable on any PlayStation 3 console," she told the Guardian. [Thanks Lefein and stoner02]
