I don't think it's the same either. If they were copy protected they wouldn't even be able to be rented. To make it illegal to sell them doesn't mean they're copy protected.
There's no ****ing way I'd get one if this were to be true. While I've only gotten rid of 1 360 game I've got rid of many Xbox and PS2 games. Think what that would do to sports games. You'll still be stuck with NBA 2K7 when NBA 2K13 comes out.Comment

Re: Sony to make it illegal to sell second hand PS3 games
I think there's something deeper in there if reselling PS3 games is illegal. Maybe Sony is trying to tap into the reselling market. If that's the case, then I think it's ingenious.
Hear me out. Now think about it. If they could negotiate a profit from each resell of each game with each company (EBgames, Gamestop ect.), then they would have a bigger piece of the pie. I'd definitely be waiting to see what it looks like. If they can corner it just right, then it might be more beneficial for the companies. I don't know how ebay would personally be affected but I'd definitely like to see if Sony could pull off something like this. Definitely waiting until 2008 to purchase anything with a SONY tag on it.......Comment

They make some money from new games since the publisher/developer has to pay Sony/MS/Nintendo a small licensing fee.Comment

Sony doesn't have the power or authority to make it illegal for you to sell something that paid for. Unless everyone has to sign a contract when they buy a game that says they can't re-sell it the used video game market will be fine. The only other alternative would be for Sony to refuse to supply Gamestop/EB with new games in protest of them selling used ones, but that would hurt Sony a lot more than it would hurt Gamestop.Comment

Sony will still sell Gamestop new games and only new copies.
Here's the problem though. If this turns out to be true and I have my doubts. Let's say it is true, then Sony could sue Gamestop or any other retailer for violation of it's license, by selling used PS3 games. Try and sell a used game at EB /Gamestop and they'll tell you it's against the law. If Sony prohibits used games sold on the PS3 then find another means to selling your used games.Comment

Bogus or not bogus?: Now bogus, apparently.

It's hilarious how speculative threads like these were immediately locked as 'based on rumor' and non-credible sources when XBOX 360 was coming out.
Here's a rumour for you to chew on...i heard the PS3 will be expensive. oh the horror.Comment

Here's a rumour for you to chew on...i heard the PS3 will be expensive. oh the horror.
story 1 - Sony games will use copy protection on ps3 games
story 2 - Sony will be changing their licensing agreement to stop second hand selling.
Now the two stories might be related, and Sony has not yet denied anything regarding the licensing agreement story.
Either way, we'll find out the closer we get to the ps3's release.
And regarding the highlighted text above, hyperbole ftw. Find me one thread on these forums or anywhere on OS that a topic was locked because of the rumor ( and being bias towards the 360) and not because it turned into a flamefest or total meltdown of misinformation with no links provided to another source. Because I was a moderator of this board until January of this year, and i don't ever remember locking a thread with information that you just claimed. And I'll gladly apologize and move along if this indeed was the case.Last edited by Bacardi151; 05-25-2006, 05:37 AM.Comment

Re: Sony to make it illegal to sell second hand PS3 games
For those that think this is impossible, or just e-BS... the technology exists to lock out used games, Kutaragi himself designed the technology, and it's been patented by Sony for some time. Here are details from the actual patent: LINK
A device and method for protection of legitimate software against used software and counterfeit software in recording media… A specific title code is read, and if this title code has been registered, the main unit shifts to a normal operation. If the code has not been registered, verification software is initiated… If matching does not occur, the disk is processed as illegitimate software… Since only titles for which legitimate software has actually been purchased and which have been initially registered in the machine table can be used, resale (so-called used software purchase) after purchase by an end-user becomes practically impossible."
"Possible tech in the PS3"
and again breifly in january:
"PS3 = No pre-owns or rentals? "
You don't go through the time and expense of developing technology if you haven't at least strongly considered using it. Funny that this is the same Sony that "blasted" the report on the Japanese launch delay a week before announcing.....*Gasp* the Japanese launch delay. Then "blasted" their own European suit who leaked that the PS3 would be expensive as hell...then announced *Gasp* the unit will be 500/600 bucks.
Yeah...just keep believin' what these clowns say.
This was laughed off a few months ago, but it looks like it may be true. If this is true Sony is done.Last edited by HMcCoy; 05-24-2006, 11:39 PM.Hank's Custom Collectibles 3D printer/painter extraordinaireComment

Re: Sony to make it illegal to sell second hand PS3 games
Well Sony's comment is no comment.
"Our UK companion site recently posted an article outlining a claim that certain UK retailers have been informed that they will be unable to sell used PlayStation 3 games.
Sony does indeed have the patented ability to create PS3 games that must be registered the first time they're inserted into your PS3, and could then only play on that specific PS3. This would obviously both severely hinder game piracy and also torpedo used game sales.
However, this rumor is apparently just that: a rumor. Despite contacting several industry insiders, neither GamesRadar US or its other companion site, www.next-gen.biz, could seem to verify the UK retailer's story. NextGen's take on the scene can be found here, complete with quotes from various of industry insiders sounding bewildered and incredulous.
Sony's US office could neither allay nor confirm our fears. Kimberly Otzman, senior manager of corporate communications, offered, "We can't comment on rumors or speculation. We plan on announcing the [launch] lineup as we get closer to the launch in November. We haven't made any announcement on used game sales."" There's no way I will believe that (unless Sony confirms it to be true). That'll be a suicide move for Sony. Where did they even get this info from?
I find that hard to believe especially from those sites listed as sources.Redskins Fan. The 82 Smurfs will never die. 83/88/92 NFL world champions!!
