If you think about it.... isn't it about the same amount of time of support of current gen systems by both companies...

the Xbox 360 was released a whole year ahead of the PS3. So calender wise it will always be a year ahead on business strategies. The PS3 will be abondoning the PS2 in about the same amount of time as the 360 its just a year behind because it was released a year behind. So its not an issue really cause I garuntee that the PS2 lineup will be limited around this time next year as a way to start forcing gamers to move foward to next gen gaming same as the Xbox.

Not following this. The PS2 is going to have 6 years of quality support at the end of 06. The xbox 4 at the end of 06. That's a 2 year difference and that's not counting 07, considering they are putting GOW 2 out that year.

360 comes out in fall of 05, production for the Xbox ends in 06
PS2 will come out fall 06, production for PS2 ends in 07.

It's basically the same time between releasing the new-system and stopping production for the old system, he wasn't comparing how long the two current-gen systems have been out.

Yeah thats what I meant. The PS2 shelf life as a whole is much longer but in this situation comparing how long they are supporting current gen compared to next Gen releases its about the same.

It appears like MS completely dropped the XBOX as soon as the 360 released.

Yes, for sure. I guess I still feel kind of upset that the xbox only had a 4 yr life cycle until the 360 came out and the system still has so much power under the hood that I doubt was tapped into it.

Agree but I also feel that power would never be tapped into. It's too easy to repackage the same game with small additions (EA for example). Doubt next gen will be any different. They take 2-3 years to get comfy with the system and once there it's to easy to stop there instead of keep working at it to push the envelope.

The only people that really don't care about this would be the real gamers. But to others, it's not a high priority to hop onto a new gen of consoles quickly. 360 costs $399 + extra controller + xbox Live + about 3 games + extended warranty. That's alot for people that just want to play some games.

I wouldn't be giving MS the OK for abandoning the console. I don't understand why people would let them do that kind of sh*t to them even BEFORE a price drop in the new gen console.

But it's pretty much a move MS HAD to do. They weren't ever going to make money from the Xbox so they had to leave it. But as a consumer, I give 2 sh*ts about how much they're making (why should I).

So basically, my thoughts on them abandoning the XBOX? I understand this business move. But I'm not happy about it. As for PS2 into 2007, I'm happy about it. By the time PS2 is abandoned in '07, enough PS3 games will be out to satisfy me. And I expect price drop by Holiday '07 for PS3.

Doesn't bother me at all, when a new system releases, I have no interest in the old one. I got rid of my Xbox and haven't missed it at all.

Same here. IMO it's not a big deal and was expected.

My bigger issue is that the 360 backwards compatibility list is terrible. They need to update that with more than 2 games every few months.

Will Sony support the PS2 THROUGH 2007 or INTO 2007? The PS3 is going to release end of 2006 so if they only support the PS2 INTO 2007, they could easily discontinue early 2007 (ie: March). That wouldn't be very long either.

Not only that but EVERY new XBox game should automatically be backwards compatible IMO. I see new XBox games coming out now and would buy them but I don't because I am not sure if they'll work on my 360 or not.

That was one of the promises that MS made that they told all the developers when developing the XBOX1 games that they should be placing a "kernal" code that would allow for BC, but it's been 2 months and no new BC titles.

I bet it's more than just adding code, but it doesn't appear anyone has really taken advantage or even if MS was telling us the truth or feeding us some BS. Only new titles to be added to the list that released in 2006 were Black and WE9, did Konami and EA add the code or not is my guess.

I guess in 4-6 months, people won't even care about 360 BC as much and MS will have left it for dead imo.

It's not like there aren't anymore games being made for XBOX. There just aren't anymore consoles for sale. If someone hasn't bought an XBOX before they abandoned it, they really have no business complaining now. If someone recently bought an XBOX, they're not really losing anything because, as I said, there are still new games coming out for it.
