I just completed GUN last night and would have to say that this game was a joyful experience from start to finish. I have wanted to buy this on the 360 since launch, but never did do to the price at $60. Once the price dropped, I knew this game would be in my collection. There are many out there that are saying bad things about it because it’s not next gen quality and just a high res port of the XBOX version. Graphically I think the game for a 1st gen 360 game is ok, but wouldn't be acceptable for a 2nd or 3rd gen.
I really enjoyed the storyline + gameplay mechanics and thought that it was a polished game that was put together very well.
Some of the boss battles were down right frustrating at times taking me more than a few tries to beat, but it also didn’t help that I didn’t do a good portion of the side missions to build up Colton. Now that I’m done with the game, I am going back to finish up all of the sidequests that I didn’t while playing the main quest and I think that Neversoft did a great job with the variety of sidequests. My one complaint though is that they could have incorporated them in a better manner into the game. I worked on some during the storyline, but not as much as I should have.
The horse riding is some of the best I have ever seen in a game. Quick draw was another nice addition that I think was also incorporated very wisely.
I like the environments even though at times they do look a bit plain. Those that were complaining that this version of the West was to empty when traveling, yes that’s true, but remember in the 1700-1800’s there were vast lands with limited travel. I understand that this is a game and it needs to be kept interesting, but there were times where I rode on horseback and there were no enemies via animals/bandits and there were times where I was always running into trouble. I just feel like GUN stayed true to the material that it was trying to present. I just wish we were able to ride a boat on the river that you could have put together in a possible side mission, maybe next time.
Also comparing this to a open sandbox game like GTA does this game no justice. I think that this game is more than GTA, this game is very story driven with the sidequests as an afterthought. GUN is like The Godfather, story comes first and then all the side missions come next.
I know that Neversoft is working on a remake of sorts with even more features for the PSP called GUN Showdown, I hope they take what they have here and expand it into a sequel.
The game can be bought now for $30-$40 next gen and $15-$20 current gen depending if you buy new or used, and I highly recommend picking it up for current or next gen.
