    Re: PSP now $250 w/

The PSP has is faults, but I've found it to be a pretty neat device.

    The biggest drawbacks have been:
    - Initial price
    - Price of certain games. Most are $40 or less. Very few have been $50, and now there are a lot of $20 games.
    - UMD format. My biggest peeve about this is the long load times on some games. Games that would have been fantastic are made frustrating by this.
    - Need to buy a memory stick

The biggest pluses of it (for me at least) have been:
    - Ability to to view images and video. I can transfer wrestling matches to it and watch them anywhere. I have not, and do not plan to ever watch a movie on it. Also never listen to music. I have an MP3 player for that which has a 20GB hard drive.
    - Awesome graphics.
    - Some really great games like SvR 2006, Madden 07 and MLB the Show.

There seems to be more variety to the games than most give credit for. I recently bought Mega Man Power Up and Pinball for my son and I, and both are fast-loading, quick play games in the spirit of Nintendo. Mega Man even has the added depth of including a level editor and a revised version of the original game. The Pinball game has a dozen classic machines, and is great with the triggers. Each was less than $20.

Other Nintendo-esque games are on the horizon, like Powerstone. The games really do seem to be picking up lately for the PSP. Some (like the 2 I just bought), have been out a while, but never got much coverage.

If Sony were willing to drop the price to $150 for a base unit with maybe a game, I think they'd see a big jump in sales.

Agreed. That's exactly the magic price point for me. If the PSP was $149, I'd be very interested.

Try underpriced! The PSP packs an amazing amount of functionality. It's an amazing little console. This deal is a steal, IMO, especially with the memory card.

Not sure they could sell it for $150 yet. A lot of impressive tech inside. But you're right, they should bite the bullet, take losses, and take over the handheld market. DS can't come close to the PSP . . . the leap is like comparing an XBOX to a PS1.

You guys bashing the PSP game library are NUTS . . .. there are a ton of great games out there right now, a bunch of which allow you to compete online. Also are several "pick up and play" type titles. Hell, even the launch Ridge Racer and Tony Hawk titles are decent for that. Sony needs to diversify their hype machine and get behind the PSP some more . . . right now, it's more impressive to me than what the PS3 is developing into.

              Pick up and Play?

              or....

              Pick up and waaaaaiiiiiitttt.....to......load

I'm sorry, but I've played a couple of games on the PSP and the load times KILL the portability aspect for me. My wife and I just pick up the DS, flip it open, play a bit, and then sleep it.

The DS has the market cornered on the pick up, get a quick fix (and complete something), and then get on with whatever you have to do.

I don't get it. . . I turn on Ridge Racer, and am playing in less than a minute . . . sometimes in less than 30 seconds if I turned the PSP off while playing Ridge Racer before. The same can happen with GTA, if I was playing that before and simply turned it off in the middle of a game.

The DS just doesn't have enough great games, IMO, and is so far behind in tech that it is difficult for me to get into. I can't think of one truly great game on the DS that makes it worth buying. And trust me, I considered it after seeing how much the PSP was initially. However, I got an awesome package deal on ebay for the PSP, and am loving it ever since.

I think that SONY has lost their main scope which was gaming, and it's more towards multimedia and trying to introduce formats that won't last long in the market.
Yeah but you don't need the cards, only for non-gaming purposes.

They're both handhelds and they're both things that are trying to catch the attention of as many people as possible. The PSP falls short not because of its "stellar" unoriginal properties but because it hasn't done anything that distinguishes it from being the hard-on supercomputer in your hand. It has great power and graphics but that's not what attracts people. I mean, they should have learned when the Game Gear was competing against the Gameboy. It's the quality of the games which Sony can't seem to get. Those titles you named are all titles that have been played before. There needs to be something brand new coming from the Sony camp to sell those things. I have to disagree with you thinking that "it's one of the most successful handhelds from the last decade. Only success I can remember is the gameboy.

PSP needs to decrease if it plans on selling more. I was thinking about getting one but hell, I could buy 360 games plus a few DS games for what they're asking for. The thing has horrible handles on it anyhow. It needs to be more appealing towards the casual gamer in order to make a significant profit. Sony needs to step up its thinking game.
Well then we just have to have different opinions here.

I'm fine with what the PSP is, despite the high number of ports. The DS is the first Nintendo handheld to do something new itself, and now all of a sudden every handheld has to be different.

It's clear the PSP could use a price drop, but it's still holding it's own. The sales numbers aren't all that bad, yet. Who knows, the Wii might slow down the DS a bit too.
