The PSP has is faults, but I've found it to be a pretty neat device.
The biggest drawbacks have been:
- Initial price
- Price of certain games. Most are $40 or less. Very few have been $50, and now there are a lot of $20 games.
- UMD format. My biggest peeve about this is the long load times on some games. Games that would have been fantastic are made frustrating by this.
- Need to buy a memory stick
The biggest pluses of it (for me at least) have been:
- Ability to to view images and video. I can transfer wrestling matches to it and watch them anywhere. I have not, and do not plan to ever watch a movie on it. Also never listen to music. I have an MP3 player for that which has a 20GB hard drive.
- Awesome graphics.
- Some really great games like SvR 2006, Madden 07 and MLB the Show.
There seems to be more variety to the games than most give credit for. I recently bought Mega Man Power Up and Pinball for my son and I, and both are fast-loading, quick play games in the spirit of Nintendo. Mega Man even has the added depth of including a level editor and a revised version of the original game. The Pinball game has a dozen classic machines, and is great with the triggers. Each was less than $20.
Other Nintendo-esque games are on the horizon, like Powerstone. The games really do seem to be picking up lately for the PSP. Some (like the 2 I just bought), have been out a while, but never got much coverage.
If Sony were willing to drop the price to $150 for a base unit with maybe a game, I think they'd see a big jump in sales.
