What is illogical about drawing attention to the shortcomings of your competitor while simultaneously boosting the popularity of a product you still reap a profit from? One of the few good things Sony has done this year is continue to support the PS2, which is what they're doing here. They're also trying to cast doubt into the minds of potential consumers considering an Xbox 360 or PS3 by sending the message of "Hey, these people are buying our console which isn't even as powerful as Microsoft's. There must be something bad about the 360, so why not enjoy a PS2 before we launch the superiour PS3." Obviously such a ploy won't work on everybody, but thats what marketing and advertising is all about.
Seriously though, I hope Sony cures cancer over the next few weeks so some of the "analysts" here can tell us about what a desperation move it was by Sony to sell some PS3's or some crap. Sony is pretty adept at spinning negative press into positive press, but we have a lot of spindoctors here who seem to enjoy doing the opposite.
I do agree with rudyjuly to a point though. The game industry is getting too big and the new machines are doing little to advance gaming beyond visual enhancements. Its still early for this generation so who knows what may come in the next few years but I'm real curious to see how the lower priced Wii does in comparison with the big ticket items offerred by Sony and Microsoft. If the DS vs PSP battle is any indication then Nintendo is sitting pretty right now.
