Might get a 360 (some questions)

I hope people don't mind indulging me though I have done some searching I still have some questions and concerns. I got to play the 360 for the first time tonight and was just amazed how much fun and how good it looks and seeing the interface in action was great.

    Anyways the questions:

    1. I've been researching and I am planning on a 360 Premium, Madden 07 and extra wireless controller as well as getting an RF Adapter so if I want to I can play on my smaller 19 inch TV. Are there any accessories I need? (by need as in would need right at that moment, not "would be good to have"...I can wait on the charger for now and the cooler looks like it has problems)

    2. I have a 32 inch TV that is not HD, I realize HD is the "way to go" but I'm not going to spend 2,000 on anything in the next 5 years except hopefully a car. Would it be fine and show off the graphics?

    3. The deal at amazon is a 360 premium and you get a selection of 4 games, choose one and pretty much is free and I plan on Madden. Anyways I heard about a MS warranty, so I could buy this from amazon and then separately call up MS and get a warranty?

    4. I keep hearing about so many problems with the 360 and although I want one very bad to get back into the gaming world (PS2 with madden, PSP no games, broken xbox, decent PC) but don't want a system that is going to break down. Anyone that could at least be midly non-biased, is it worth it? (I would not at the start, but would end up going online and like sports, action and other popular genres)

    Thanks for the help.

Re: Might get a 360 (some questions)

    1) I would suggest a charger if you're using more than one controller.

    2) There are some sweet HDTV deals out there. I bought a 27" HDTV LCD for $500 last year @ Office Depot. Newegg.com also has some great deals on flat panels as well. IMO it's the #1 reason to go next-gen. Some of the games look amazing in HD.

    3) If you buy it new at Amazon or go with any reputable etailer, Microsoft will have no problem selling you a warranty. If you want a MUST HAVE accessory then this is it. !

    4) I think the 360 is worth it, I still have my launch system and it has been great. No one can deny that the 360 has been trouble free. If you buy an extended warranty from MS then this becomes a non-issue.

If you can afford it, it's worth it. I would not buy Madden at all. I would recommend picking up NBA 2k7 and wait a couple weeks for all the other big titles to come out, Tony Hawk, Gears of War, Call of Duty 3, Smackdown, etc. If you must have a football game, I would go for NCAA instead. JMO.

Get a warranty, I bought the MS warranty.

Well I'm still on my launch 360 and it works great. As for games I also wouldn't get Madden or NCAA unless you have to have a football game now because of better games out and more coming right now.
If you want a football game then take whichever one you like playing the most (Pro/College). If it doesn't matter get NCAA.

Re: Might get a 360 (some questions)

I'm also on my launch 360, but I'd definitely get a warranty on any game system. Yes you can get the warranty directly from MS after you buy it from Amazon. There's a mail-in form in the box.

I prefer NCAA over Madden, but I think Madden's all right. The presentation could be better and the fatigue issue is still there, but overall it plays a decent game of football. There are definitely better games out (NBA2k, Oblivion, Dead Rising, etc) and a bunch of games coming out that look like they'll be great, but if you need a football game, you need a football game.

Re: Might get a 360 (some questions)

Co-sign on getting a warranty. I got a two year one and now that my 360 is making a little more noise than it used to I'm glad that I did!

Edit - Right now the only sports games really worth getting on the 360 are the basketball ones, NBA 2k and CH 2k. They're fantastic. But baseball is a complete disaster, Madden is without a soul and still not quite a completely finished product IMO, and the two hockey games are both good as some things and lousy at others. If you like racing PGR is great and if you like boxing Fight Night is a lot of fun but it's not a classic by any stretch. Oh, and the Tiger game is very good but still flawed, though better than anything ever on current-gen. I think next year's Madden could be very good though and this year's college game was great if you actually like the college game.

Double edit - If you're not going to buy a 360 then what ARE you going to buy? I hope it's not one of those grossly overpriced and over-hyped PS3 units. I don't think a Wii is going to be a bad purchase at all but I'm not sold on it yet as a solo console, meaning I think it would be nice to have as a supplement to my 360. And you really can't stay with the current-gen stuff much longer since 2007 is probably going to be the last year of reasonable support for the Xbox and even on the PS2 innovation should grind to a halt. Buy a 360, I doubt you'll regret, well so long as you get a warranty as well...

Thanks for the help everyone. I put down Madden because I do need a football game. I am hoping to get the 360 though I need to see if I will be able to get the funds (should be able to).

I always loved my XBOX more than any other console and Live was always great so I had planned on the Wii but with the online quality and availability that's why I thought of the 360.

Since it seems all consoles when they first come out they have problems and the PS3 won't be worth it, a no brainer for me.

Honestly, if you do get one, I'd get it at best buy, EB, or gamestop, or anywhere else you can get a warranty that will allow you to take it directly to the store and get another one on the spot. It seems as though a lot of us have had problems with the 360 breaking down. Now, that fact may deter you from getting one, but for me, as long as I can take it back and get another one, i'm set. I'm having that much fun with mine. I just wouldnt want to send mine back to MS and be without it for a couple weeks, so if you can get it at Best Buy.

Pass on Madden. I sold mine after two weeks. It still is not better than the old 2K5.
Costco is a good option (if you shop there). They are pretty liberal on returns. I read someone returned a launch console that died 9 months later!
                  Get an extended warranty.

                    1. If you're not worried about gettin a play and charge kit (which i really think you should) then no, there's no other accessories you NEED that are imperative to own

                    2. Why not buy the $40 VGA cables and play on your PC Monitor? You can tell the difference between last gen and next gen on a regular tv but some games in HD will WOW you.

                    3. You can call up MS and get the warranty over the phone.. great purchase if you're afraid of system failure or just want peace of mind.

                    4. It's always a risk when buying an electronic device with new hardware in it... but for more peace of mind, you can wait till sometime next year, that's when the new 360's will start being manufactured (which have the better chips to help with overheating) As long as you're planning on buying a warranty though, i don't think you'd have to worry about a system breaking down... system failure? fine, send it in to MS, and get another one and transfer the warranty to the new system. I don't really have an opinion on system failures though... launch PS2 fragged on me with DDE's while my launch xbox still continues to run strong for me... and i've heard the complete opposite from other people (launch ps2 running well, launch xbox dying on them) so it's all on you

Best advice I've seen,I got mine from Best Buy,and when i got the red rings of death took it back and got another. The only thing about using your warranty is you have to purchase another warranty for the new 360 they give you.

I don't know I liked it when I got to play it the previous night, but either way what would you recommend then instead of it? I would need a game that would hold me over until I can rent games which wouldn't be right away.

I'll have to see, being able to even get one is still not 100% and not getting a 360, game, controller and play n charge all for $450 whereas for all of that but the charger for $509 at best buy, I don't know. I also don't have instant transport (no car) so if it broke down I might have to wait a week anyways. But if anyone knows of a good combo at a good price at one of the big 3 I'm up for it.

It seems to be very important to get so I guess I'll get it if I buy the 360.

I have a 19 inch TV in my room and my PC monitor is only 17 inches and the main TV is 30 inches. Why would I use my PC monitor, would it just be good for using that instead of the 19 inch or do you mean it would look even better than the 32 inch TV? I can wait on that either way.

Yeah and I get 30 days too to buy it? That is a great option and not bad for $60 over 2 years.

Yeah I have had a great history with warranties and systems. Had my first XBOX crap out, returned to XBOX and got a new one at gamespot, same with my PS2.

Although I would be on my 360 more than my PS2 and my one game, it's not like I would be gaming 5 hours a day so if it took a few weeks for them to fix it and return it back I could live with it, it would be annoying but I don't know if it would be worth $50 so I could get it at best buy.

unless you return it within the 90 day factory waranty. they will just apply the old waranty to the new system in that case.

Graphics look fine on a non HDTV. Hooking the box up to a computer monitor would get you some HD like graphics from what I hear.

You can get a warranty directly from MS I believe. I disagree with many who say don't get Madden and this is coming from a NFL2K5 die hard. I still think NFL2K5 is better from a gameplay standpoint, but Madden 07 is a good game and MUCH better than NCAA in my opinion. NCAA 07 plays just like the current gen EA football games to me with a slight upgrade in the running game.

My launch 360 is still working fine and I made sure to keep it out in the open so there is no over heating issues. I probably don't use it as much as other on this board though. Once a day if I am lucky.
