The cartoon is actually enjoyable."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: Viva Pinata (XBOX 360) Impressions
The whole concept and idea of this game are Sims/Pokemon like, but it's very different. Graphically RARE has made a very pretty looking game. This game has peaked my interest, but I want to read some reviews and will only pick this up after trading in or ebaying a few games.Comment

Teamxbox Review 8.4
To be honest, there's a lot more in this game that I haven't touched on in this review, but do you really want to read a 5 page review detailing every little element? No, of course you don't. This is one of those games that you should really experience for yourself. I'm over a dozen hours into the game, and I'm still finding all sorts of new tricks of the pinata-wrangling trade. The most interesting thing about Viva Pinata is the fact that it's actually better suited for adults than it is for children. Managing your resources (er, your pinatas) can be a lot of work, and I'm actually finding the game to be more challenging than many real-time strategy games. I mean, anyone can lead an army into battle, but do you know how hard it is to keep a Fudgehog from eating all of your Whirlms?
8.4 out of 10
It feels a lot like a blend of a real-time strategy games and The Sims, with a little Animal Crossing thrown in for good measure.

IGN's closing comments. This game sounds like a winner from the few reviews that are out.
Closing Comments
If you've played The Sims or Animal Crossing and enjoyed them, Viva Pinata is a safe bet. The gameplay is more interactive and hectic, and facing the consequences of your actions, be they good or bad, is enjoyable gaming. Viva Piñata may have been designed with children in mind, but Rare has created a game that anybody with an open mind can get into and have fun with. The characters are endearing and the abounding sense of discovery can't be denied. Despite the slim interpersonal Xbox Live interaction we would hope for in a game like this, Viva Piñata has enough to explore and keep you busy that it makes for a solid purchase.
Another Takefrom Douglass C. Perry
For many years now, Microsoft and Rare have wanted to create game for all ages, including games for kids. Viva Pinata is definitely a kids’ game. That may put you off. But as opposed to the dozens of crappy kids games churned out by other publishers each year, Microsoft and Rare have made an engaging and surprisingly refreshing title. It's deep in the way that old Nintendo kids games used be, like The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Brothers, even Pokemon.
Viva Pinata isn't a platformer or an RPG though. It's really a very conscious blend of The Sims, Animal Crossing and Pokemon. I like to call it a garden sim, or jokingly, a shovel simulator. But it's more than that. And the only way to really convey the gameplay of Rare's new gem is to play it. It never plays the same way twice, and it's filled with surprising AI behavior, so if you and a friend each started games simultaneously, you'd have completely different gardens within a few hours. The gameplay is deep with choices, it's very well explained (though there is an overabundance of text for a kid), and it's never slow. Your garden will start off quickly: Animals show up and move in, they eat, breed and fight. Weirdly masked helpers appear to give guidance, and their help, their shops and their presence adds greatly to the experience. The online aspect, sharing and trading animals (like sending Sours to your buddy) should play out very well in theory; unfortunately, I was unable to try it, so I don't know firsthand.
In the long run, I'm inclined to think that I'll like Viva Pinata better than either Kameo or Perfect Dark Zero. It’s certainly different enough.Comment

Re: Viva Pinata (XBOX 360) Impressions
Well I've been playing now for nearly 4 straight hours and I feel like I could easily play another 4 straight hours. The game's a blast. At first I was kinda worried because it does seem the early part of the way the game talks to you in training is geared toward 8 year olds but alas, that worry proved to be a silly one as I am far in now and it's a very adult-like game as the IGN review says.
It's amazing how real it seems, I had a snail-like pinata die in front of a hedgehog-type pinata and he was devastated. He has been crying for the last hour and nothing I can do will cheer him up. I just got done building him a 550 dollar place to live, hopefully that will do the trick. It's sad too because James (yes you name your creatures, LOL) was my only creature who won a prize and is all rainbow colored so it just devastates me to see him sit around by the pond like this and cry his eyes out.
Amazing...and most importantly, uniquely amazing.
PS Whoever said this was for kids...well they haven't had to stand in the woods and take a shovel to a dying snail-pinata either because he was upsetting James even more. No one said this game was gonna be easy but as you're wacking away with the shovel and the snail is crying, it can be even harder than you can imagine. Thankfully after 4 good wacks the nightmare is over.Last edited by ODogg; 11-11-2006, 12:40 AM.Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

Re: Viva Pinata (XBOX 360) Impressions
Rodster,
This is definetley FRESH.
I'd say it more borrows from the sims and animal crossing... the whole colllecting of pinatas is kind of misleading. You are actually trying to LURE them into your gardens by having other wild life, flowers, fruits, vegetables, that those animals are interested in. Then once they join the garden it's a matter of keeping them and trying to get others like them to come in and mate to make more.
This has to be the weirdest most bizzaro game i've played. This a true "buy all i can" gamer since the late 80s with the Atari.
Viva might have been aimed at kids, but the staff at Rare put enough into the game that even adults will find it interesting enough. I just hope i can dedicate more time to this game since it deserves to be played.BeyondMediaOnline.comComment
