Interesting answers from some of the top execs in the gaming industry.
selling over 6 millions systems in one year world wide isn't a success, and calulating 10 million sold by march isn't a big success, then what is.

And that is the extent of Microsofts' head start. With the other two consoles on the market now,the 360's already ebbing momentum will be largely stopped.
The pent up demand for the PS3 and the low pricing of the Wii will box in the 360 in terms of market share.
Halo 3 plus a steep price cut may be the only chip MS has to play going forward.

I don't know about that. I'd say the lack of PS3's over the holiday season will either swing people toward the innovative Wii or the 360. The pent up demand for the PS3 is waning.

And on a 60" HDTV..this system is INSANELY beautiful.
WHat more do I need? How about some variety? That list reads like this:

              Sports
              shooter
              shooter
              shooter

Pretty bland lineup to me. How many shooters do you need?

Re: Why hasn't the 360 been a big success?

I think everyone knows that we will not be seeing true "next-gen" games until the turn of the year. Cliffy B claims that after GOW, there's still a lot more that can be done.

I waited until the end of Spring for my 360. There simply wasn't anything there to convince me otherwise. In my opinion, the system is doing great.

Let's look at 3 key games coming out soon:

                    Alan Wake
                    Forza 2
                    Mass Effect
                    Bio-Shock

This Fall hinted at what is next-gen, and it's not slowing down.

For me, the system's financials are only important in the sense that they are head above water.

I do not need to see the 360 topple any past sales performances to prove to me it is a great gaming machine. I need the games for that machine, in my hands.
Being kind, one to another, never disappoints.

I would be surprised if they didn't sell 4 million. It's new, it's different, and it's the cheapest system of the three.

Re: Why hasn't the 360 been a big success?

IMO, most, not all, but most people who actually do own the 360 own a high-def TV, and are having a blast with the system, with more and more features and more and more dev support piling up by the minute. If you think the GOW, Viva, Dead Rising, Saints Row, Oblivion, GRAW...etc threads on this board are just make believe, and that we're just pretending to have a really great experience. Thats cool, your choice. If folks want to stand outside of the party...God bless em'.

This gen is not the mind-blowing leap there was last time, and thats for all 3 systems, not just the 360..so if people want to look at that smaller advance, and decide to keep rollin with th PS2/xbox...God Bless em'.

Bottom line...No matter how you compare sales curves to last generations sales, MS and the 360 are here to stay. Point blank. Yes most of the buzzword triple-A titles have been shooters, but there have been RTS's, RPG's, fighting, racers, flight sims, survival horror, sandbox games and Viva Pinata which is cool in its own separate category..not to mention TONS of arcade games and classics. Plenty of variety, and more on the way. Add high-def movies to the list also.

Folks can trot out all the numbers they want...next-gen so far has been off the hook for most, and is only going to get better with the Wii and PS3.

Although the three are in competition with each other, the Wii is in a race all on it's own in a way. Looking at this in a personal POV, I know that being a 360 owner, there is no great reason to go out and get a PS3, because the two are so similiar. But the Wii is completely different, and will be under my Christmas tree this year as a gift from me to the household (3 other gamers live with me).

I can't justify spending the money on a PS3, having spent a whole bunch on the 360 a year ago. But the pricepoint of the Wii along with the concept makes it a logical purchase.

I reckon there are ALOT of 360 owners in my shoes and on the other end of the spectrum, many PS3 owners who wouldn't buy the 360 but would get the Wii.

In that sense, Nintendo has done a great job with positioning the Wii as an alternative and more inclusive system. In the end it wouldn't surprise me to hear about the Wii selling great at all.

                                GameStop Reveals PS3 Attach Rate

November 21, 2006 - In its quarterly financial statement call, GameStop revealed some surprising attach rate numbers for the PS3 and Wii. Sony's latest console saw a low attach rate of 1.5 games per console sold, with Madden NFL 07 and Resistance: Fall of Man the best-selling titles. Wii saw a "surprisingly good" attach rate of 3.0 games per system sold. Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Red Steel were the top sellers at GameStop and EB Games.

GameStop executives believe the low attach rate for PS3 is do to the "large percentage of PS3s resold at a huge premium." It is believed that once the PS3 is in the hands of "real gamers," PS3 titles should see a growth in attach rate.

Unbeknownst to anyone who has wandered into a GameStop, but second shipments of PS3 and Wii have arrived, either in warehouses or in stores (and therefore already sold out). It is expected that new shipments of each console will arrive weekly through the end of the year.
